About Linda Farnes

Native Australian paper wasps (polistes humilis) are fascinating insects. They have quite complex behaviours, and are not actively aggressive, unless there is a threat to either the nest or themselves. Wasps, unlike bees can sting more than once and should be approached with caution. They do have good hearing, as well as good eyesight. If you are taking photos avoid cameras with sound effects. I have been photographing this nest most days and the residents do appear to be familiar with me. They are pollinators and nectar feeders, but feed insects to their larvae. This makes them very useful in the garden.

Polistes humilis are native to Australia, but have been accidentally introduced to New Zealand. If you are interested in finding out more, this is a link to the best article I’ve found on line: www.nzgeo.com/stories/paper-wasps-guests-or-pests/
