Hiking to Griffith Observatory through Ferndell in Los Angeles

Published 2022-10-02
Griffith Observatory is an iconic place in Los Angeles and Griffith Park. While there are many ways to get there, one of the best is to hike the many trails that lead to the observatory. My favorite is probably the Ferndell Trail, which is a beautiful, family friendly hiking trail in Los Angeles. Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments.

  • I grew up doing this hike nearly weekly if not more often even as a kid and teen. I also would sometimes continue from the observatory parking lot up to the top of Mt. Lee. That was back in the 1960s and 1970s. I sometimes even walked up Western Ave. from nearly Santa Monica Blvd. but most times took the public bus to Hollywood Blvd. and then up to Ferndale.

HI AMY!!!!!! Glad to see you in the videos again. 😀
  • Very cool. We’re always looking for kids friendly hikes that are short with plenty of shade. Ferndell looks perfect 👏👏

Nice little hike. It is a few blocks near Hollywood / Western Station, so it is convenient for people who don't have cars. The trail has a plaque saying it used to be a settlement for Tongva people. Aside from ferns, it also has coastal redwoods.
  • This is one of the first places and hikes I want to do when I move out there. It is soo pretty and always loved the observatory.
  • Griffith has so much stuff. I’d like to go inside the observatory one day. Maybe next time, although I might be too north. The place you rested had an early morning yoga class when I went haha. And I recognize this music for obvious reasons. 😂
  • You Guy's Rock I Love You Great Video I am from Griffith for many years born there Awsom
  • Any parking tips? How do we go there without paying $10 per hour parking? Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but I wanted to ask if you can park at the bottom and ride the DASH bus up? The catch with this option is that I noticed a sign saying something about the lower areas closing at sunset. The observatory stays open until 10PM so this was not an option for people planning to stay later. I visited the observatory with my teenager on 3/29/23 and parking was $10 per hour. I paid for 2 hours, and it was not enough time to visit the observatory and then go for a hike. One tip I would add is to use the restrooms deeper within the observatory as they are very much cleaner and less visited than those found at the entrance. Thanks for your awesome videos ! I left LA in December of 2013 for SF and now I am near Chico, but always returning.

I’ve been to Griffith Observatory many times & love it but have never done any hiking in that area. Ferndell looks cool 😎

So beautiful!! I've been to Griffith Park!

Looks like a great hike! Last did the hike up to and behind the Hollywood sign… This will be my next conquest, PLUS it will hopefully save some $$$ for not parking up at the Observatory!!! THANKS for another great video and idea!

  • Inspired by an older video of yours, I did that hike from my hotel in North Hollywood just before COVID in December 2019. Great views all the way. I have to go back when the observatory is open.

I've taken this hike a few times, you're right there are steep parts that always get me a little winded, so I try and go really early in the morning before it gets too hot. Sunrise is also nice to see during that time. 👌 Do you have any videos on Sequoia national park? Preferably entering through the north end at hwy 180 into Kings Cyn and Grant grove area? I'm researching a visit there and prefer not to drive the more twisty steep roads entering through the south end.
  • Been eons since I've hiked Ferndale, sometimes the bear at the entryway is wearing a sweater. Someone in the neighborhood crochets sweaters for the bear.

Woah I've never considered hiking to the observatory! When I do go I start at the observatory and reach the H sign

There's a cool hidden place called Royce Canyon in Griffith Park not many people go there. Went there recently and there's a cave and even a spring because of the recent rain.
