FYI the elderly gentleman in the crowd who was emotional was Peter Higgs, the physicist who predicted the existence of the particle in the 1960s.
-
RIP Peter Higgs What an honor to see a life's work come to fruition.
-
My favourite moment of the year was watching Peter Higgs cry.
-
Just think, we all lived to see the Higgs Field to be real AND Gravitational Waves. All within only 4 years!
-
You did it Pete! You're a part of history. And you lived to see it happen. Good for you mate.
-
I remember being on a shift serving a coffee to Peter Higgs in his local science department, I didn't even know who he was, until I asked a colleague why there was a giant painting of the man I served a coffee to in the stairway. Incredibly humbled man and amazing physicist of our time.
-
I remember this, what a badass day for science. Also seeing Peter Higgs cry tears of joy was beautiful, all those years of hard work and he was able to see it come to fruition before he passes away.
-
Ladies and gentlemen... we got em.
-
If he hadn't said a standard of 5 deviations I never would have believed it.

Two hundred years ago, people experimented with electiricy. How the hell was this supposed to help people to stop starving? They didn't have an answer. Of course, today, electricity is used to power farming equipment for mass production and refrigeration for food preservation. My point is that we don't know how this new particle will be helpful to fighting hunger, or whatever. But knowing more opens up more possibilities than knowing less.

It's so boggling how this clip makes me tear up really bad. Beautiful event in our history. Thanks Pete.
-
I cant imagine what it's like to know that billions were spent on trying to prove your theory as correct, the weight on your shoulders must have been huge. The tears must have not only been a huge sigh relief, but also pride in how he changed the understanding of physics forever. He deserved that Nobel prize, very intelligent man.
-
RIP Peter Higgs, you were a brilliant mind
-
I'm watching this video 10 years later as it happened. It still sends chills down my spine. Best wishes to Peter and to Everyone involved in the research, support staff, friends and families of the researchers, whose support is very much needed but often under appreciated.
-
Dr Higgs was crying, hell ya, I would too.
-
So this is how Penny feels when speaking to Sheldon.....
-
I'm here just after the news of Peter Higgs' death. I know zilch about physics but I've been seeing the news about CERN and all that since this all started. A great man
-
A big "Thank You" to thousands of scientists and engineers around the world... they have dedicated so much of their lives to make this glorious day come true... you have served humanity well... lets hope younger generation of scholars will takeover the mantle with as much devotion.

The people in this hall alone make up 99.99% of the total sum of IQ of everyone on earth.

Like Peter, I cry when I watch this! It's so exciting!
