If the puppet is supposed to signify her father, then there are some interesting details. The first is that few species of birds have genitalia, with geese and ducks being among them. Their genitals are distinctly corkscrew shaped. I think the corkscrew drill that comes out of the puppet's mouth is in reference to this. The second thing is that duck and geese breeding is often quite violent and non-consensual, which would further cement her father as likely being sexually abusive.
  • Something I haven't seen anyone mention is the significance of her name. Part of it is of course referencing Mother Goose, but there's also a bogeyman (bogeywoman, rather) from the Isle of Man known as the Gooseberry Wife. And we all know that bogey-creatures have a fondness for children... namely hurting or downright murdering them.
  • The way Mother Gooseberry is designed reminds me of Leatherface for some reason. So creepy, but great!

Looks like the player character can be male or female; since Gooseberry will be menacing you either way, I doubt she's a man-hater in particular. And especially not a child protector. They say her motherly attitude is phony, and in the trailer you can hear her yell "wicked child!" So she's probably a child abuser because of her own messed-up childhood.
  • You mentioned how gooseberry has dolls- not uncommonly children who have been abused can be attracted to playing with dolls due to feeling a lack of control in their lives and needing to see their own emotions validated within the actions of the doll itself. Her attraction to dolls as an adult may have had been her trying to process what happened to her and how she feels, and regain a feeling of control in her own life.

I think she was the daughter of a Murkoff scientist who was abused/experimented on by him, to the point that she was groomed into being a TV presenter purely as a vessel to broadcast whatever subliminal messages Murkoff wanted to convey to a new generation of young minds. Perhaps her mutilation was the result of her trying to resist, causing her show to be cancelled while Murkoff decided to keep her around to mess with other test subjects. I remember how in Outlast 2, there were various TV screens blaring static that were dotted around Blake's school, to say nothing of the hallucinations literally bring catalyzed by radio tower transmissions. What if her 'show' was broadcasting similar microwave signals to kids?

I'm really excited to play this as I watched let's plays of the previous games so I found the games hilarious rather than scary. I'm also a psychologist and my main body of work is on trauma/ recovery so I'm interested to see where they'll take it as the reality of mental health care and research in the 60's is terrifying enough without mkultra adding to it.
  • I am so excited for this game to come out!! Thanks for covering Mother Gooseberry, she seems like a terrifying, yet intriguing character!
  • My theory is that the morphogenic engine hasn’t been created yet, and the trials themselves are an early iteration of the morphogenic engine. Inducing enough pain and horror through an experience rather than a machine.

When Outlast 1 first came out, it left such a strong impression on me that I still have weekly nightmares about it ever since! I'm not scared of it anymore obviously but still. Such a good game, good gameplay, narrative and story.
  • Suddenly my past daddy issues seem pretty tame LOL.... being a creepy serial killer is just a bit more intense than going for men who were emotionally unavailable. Just a bit

As I listen to this entire video I just keep thinking about how Mother Gooseberry gives me vibes of Professor Pyg or the Doll Maker from Batman and Leather Face from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, idk maybe it’s just me

I'm super excited for this game I'm a huge fan of Outlast mainly the first game and it's DLC Whistleblower! Outlast 2 was okay but very confusing I'm excited and nervous that this is gonna be a multiplayer and single player experience btw Red Barrels did mention that this will not be asymmetrical or won't be anything like Dead by Daylight! It's also gonna be crossplay from what I heard I also hope we get proximity chat in game where if you're far away from the players they won't hear you but if you're closer to them than they can hear you!

I'm very excited for this game. She's the one that caught my attention. I have a feeling she'll be a favorite, like Eddie Gluskin and Trager.
  • @NMbones98
She definitely looks jokerized and the puppet is very reminiscent of the ventriloquist from Batman imo
  • Great video. I really like how you break down these horror games. Thanks, Harry and greetings from San Diego, CA.

Dude... I just found you today. Whatever I watched that got you in my recommended, I'm glad I watched it. Your videos are very well structured the way you break it down then deliver it back in fitted portions. Most games you've done I haven't heard of, but I feel like I've played them by the end of the video. Thanks for all your hard work. Definitely subscribed.
