How To Care for Dr. Martens Boots | Made Strong. Made to Last

Whether your Dr. Martens boots are well-loved or box-fresh, there’s a lot of confusing advice out there about how to care for them. We’re here to help.

Armed with a brand-new pair of 1460 boots, Snake Denton enlisted Daniel and Lia from the DM’s store in Carnaby Street, London, to walk him through the tips and tricks to break in and look after your boots, shoes, and sandals.

They’re also joined by our resident leather expert from the DM’s factory, Lucy, to tackle some boot care myths from the helpful to the haunting. Grab your boots and settle in for some tips and tricks from the experts.

Have you tried any weird and wonderful ways to look after your boots? Tell us in the comments.

Thank you for watching. For over six decades, Dr. Martens footwear has been adopted and subverted by musicians, subcultures and bold individuals. These people stand out from the crowd — and a pair of DM’s boots or shoes has always accompanied their journey of self-expression.

I've got the 2976 crazy horse and have wonder balsam, can I still use wonder balsam to condition them boots when they start feeling dry, or is dubbin the way to go instead?

What to do if the boots squeak? I’m not sure. I think it’s insole, but it might be an outsole too. I’ve got 1460 nubuck model

Is it better to delace your boots when they are new for the first few months so you are not trying to cram them on and relace once you have them comfortably on.

I've had my 1460 smooth leather boots for about 6 months. I've been using Wonder Balsam but the crease at the on the top of the boots has become heavily cracked. I was advised by your customer service team that this is due to wear and tear - after 6 months? How should I care for the cracked leather?

NEW OWNER HERE! I’m kind of curious about wiping it down after putting in balsam, won’t it just wipe away the product?
