A video tributing the top ten female tennis players of the 1980's

I calculated the list by viewing the results of every grand slam from 1980-1989, and I gave a certian amount of points for each winner, runner-up, semi-finalist and quarter-finalist. The results are in the video.

Good Video. Love that song 😎

Ilana Berger was an Israeli tennis player of Mexican descent in some tournaments since 1986.

Tracy should definitely be ahead of Andrea and Wendy. Tracy had 2 USOs to her name. Those other 2 had zip.
  • @craigferris1
I couldn't agree more. Tracy was No.1 and had a winning edge of Chris. From memory the only major title Andrea ever one was the Sour Grapes open and she won that every year!

Thank-you for agreeing with me, Evonne and Arantxa made it high on my other top ten lists of the 70's and 90's

Even discounting the 79 USO, Tracy's still 1 grand slam ahead of A and W. That's a huge lead. Esp A. Wendy may be excused for having better career longevity than Tracy, but Andrea's career was just as truncated by injury as Tracy's was.

Top 10 of the 80’s 1. Martina Navratilova 2. Cris Evert 3. Steffi Graf 4. Hama Manlikova 5. Tracey Austin 6. Andrea Jeager 7. Gabriela Sabatini 8. Helena Sukova 9. Pam Shriver 10. Manuela Maleeva-fragniere

Chris Evert got the 70s for sure.....A winning record of 197-1 on clay from 1973 to 1979 is astounding! What more can you say? Oh yeah, she has the highest winning percentage of 90% of all time for both men and women.

I'd pretty much have to agree with this list and rankings. I might drop Turnbull out and place Sanchez Vicario #10 simply because she is the only woman to win a GS in the 80s (89 French) and not be on the list. Granted, she was barely on the radar until her upset of Evert at the 88 French. Otherwise, I think it's spot on!
  • @thequinnster72
I stand corrected, Evonne Goolagong Cawley won the '80 Wimbledon Championships. Turnbull did certainly have the longevity in that decade over either Evonne or Arantxa.
  • @BelizeDrummer
Steffi Graf's "Golden Slam" was something extraordinary!
  • @juju1305
the exact same arguments could apply to any player of the 90s facing today's top players.
  • The first two are obvious (i think it could have just as easily been Evert at number one though) but otherwise, I find the list interesting. Thanks.
  • @hydrolito
@juju1305 Martina Hingis, William Sisters were around in the late 90s also in 1990's Vicario, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Novatna(made #1 in doubles, #2 in Singles), Anna Kournikova (#1 in doubles, #8 in singles), etc. These players at their peak they would beat most of the women players today badly.
  • @Bonkatsu12
Remember I'm only judging them by their performances in the years from 1980-1989. Within those years Martina won 15 grand slams, while Evert won 9. And how can you say Martina's record at the french was dismal. She won it twice and was runner-up four times! And four US Open's is so-so???? Wow you have high expectations

@grafgirl27 Wrong Goolagong Won Wimbledon in Singles 1971, Won Wimblodon in Mixed Doubles in 1972, & to final in singles.Won in Doubles in 1974, won in Singles 1980 so won at Wimbledon 4 times plus 1 final. Won Australian in singles 74,75,76,77 Doubles in 1971,74,75,76,77. U.S. Open Singles to finals 1973,74,75,76 in doubles Semifinals 72,73,74 French Won in 1971 doubles semi finals in 1971. So not giving near enough credit to Evonne Goolalong one of the greatest from 1971 to 1980.
  • @hydrolito
@grafgirl27 The way the tournaments are set up the higher ranked players play lesser ones until later rounds so number one would play lowest ranked person maybe in the 300's then number 2 next lowest, so when no top players makes it to the quarter finals is big surprise. So Serena Williams (Beat Some #1 players even when ranked below 100) and Anna Kournikova (also beat several#1s) were beating top players even before they were winning tournments. So same would be true of the players in the 80's.
  • @Bonkatsu12
Sorry I'm not sure, you could try looking it up on wikipedia or something
  • @tudormiller8898
Apart from Martina Navratilova, Gabriella Sabatini. I haven't heard of anyone else.
  • @juju1305
she dominated in the late 80s. Chris remained a top contenter THROUGHOUT the 80s, winning nine slams out of 18 finals. Navratilova won 15 slams in the 80s. So how does that make graf number one, please explain.
