In this documentary, we take you inside South Africa’s whites-only town, Orania.

Orania is home to around 3,000 residents and if you want to live there, you have to meet certain requirements. The first and most important is that you have to be a White Afrikaner. Afrikaners are descendants of Dutch settlers who played a key role in establishing and enforcing apartheid. Additionally, residents must be Calvinist Christians, have a clean criminal record, and exclusively speak Afrikaans within the enclave.

Despite its size, Orania is a self-sufficient community with its own local government, currency, flag, college, farms, bank, airstrip, and their own rules. The community's growth and ambitions are notable, yet it remains deeply controversial. Critics label Orania as racist, while supporters argue it is a place for cultural preservation and self-determination. This ongoing debate highlights the complexities of Orania's existence in modern-day South Africa.

I want to find out the truth about Orania and see it for myself. What drives people to live in such a secluded and controversial place? How do they balance their ideals with modern South Africa? By making the 9-hour journey from Cape Town, I hope to answer these questions, meet the locals, and share the real story of this unique community.

Thanks to Orania's team for providing some extra footage.

As a Zulu boy I totally understand. In Kzn there are Zulu chiefs who control massive pieces of land and build communities based on their cultural heritage and no one ever complains. Orania should be left alone to strive on their terms which aren't affecting any outsider. ✌️💪
  • As a black person, all I see here is a group of white people protecting themselves from the brutality of South African Criminals. It's very inspiring.

"Frozen in time"? It's like one of the only places in the country that's moving forward and making a success of itself. Wtf are you talking about?
  • I am white , I am English speaking ( only ) , I am South African born and raised and I still do not qualify to live there , Does that make Orania a racist town ? They are doing no harm to anyone and these people are very hard working folks who want to live in a safe community and thrive and grow together. Our history is not a great one but it is there , you can tear down a statue it will not change the past. Only thing we can focus on is now and the future we are building for the next generation ( our children ). They deserve a better South Africa
  • "No-one is coming to save you" and "create your future" are really messages that all South Africans should take to heart. To many people are waiting for the government to save them, or to simply give them a future, and it's just never going to happen.

As a black South African I’m fully behind the idea of cultural preservation & maintaining community values as long as those values aren’t rooted in hatred & racism.
  • Did you find the only guy in Orania that voted EFF? 💀😂😂😂
  • As a black man, I'm so disappointed at our black leaders. Look at how beautiful and peaceful orania is. They failed us.
  • I am black, and what is happening in Orania is truly inspiring. I think each and every community in South Africa should strive to be like Orania.

Orania is controversial cause it's successful.. if it turned into a township people wouldn't care...

No loud music in every corner , no drugs , no crime , clean streets , no gangs etc.. Orania sounds good to me 👍

The title should be “I visited South Africa’s only safe town”

I am a so called Coloured in South Africa and say this...Orania asks nothing from anyone....does everything themselves....no crime and lots of our politicians have been there and are impressed so stop with this nonsense and leave them be!!!

One point that wasn’t mentioned is that Orania has been developed entirely on private property. They bought a huge piece of land and developed it for their own use. I don’t see a problem with that. I wouldn’t like to live in such an insular community because I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. We’re all different and that’s okay 😊
  • As a black asian man from antarctica, I see nothing wrong with this!
  • @chrish3051
It's not that they are racist It's just that they are tired of racism so they went on their own way doing their own thing, so i respect them.

If Zulu people would revamp Kwa Maye-Maye and have a similar approach as Orania they'd be labeled as tribalists so i really don't care about what South Africans think about this town,us black people we can't even mobilize our own communities
  • As a black South African living in Limpopo...i say preserve your culture guys. I support it
  • Had a Irish aunt who immigrated to Rustenburg many years ago and married a Afrikaner by the name of Van Der Sandt. Both have passed away but remembering him on the past weekend when Ireland played the Boks as he was rugby mad! Greetings to all in SA from Ireland and big fan of Eben Etzebeth !
