when you're having an emotional breakdown but you're also a skilled opera singer

They censored "shit". I guess audiences can handle cannibalistic murder but not mild profanity.
  • For all of you complaining about this performance, you're forgetting something about Bryn Terfel. He's an opera singer. Hence the weird pronunciation.

I love seeing opera singers crossing over into musical theatre. Bryn Terfel’s voice is bone chilling.

The abrupt shifts from his mourning and anger is so effective!!!!

In defense of Bryn Terfel's performance, I think his interpretation of the character is that of a disillusioned rage. Yes, you can furrow your brow and scream to convey that you're angry, but here, he opts to play Sweeney as so incredibly broken that he's essentially careless. I think someone that firmly makes such a horrific declaration with relative indifference is far more terrifying than someone who's overly cartoonish and obvious. Furthermore, we know Bryn is capable of big campy emotions in an MT setting; just look at his "If I Were a Rich Man" (linked below). Therefore, I feel this interpretation is nuanced and intentional, not lacking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HemzWODfNcs

1:45 I know he’s an opera singer, but seriously, the part where he’s going through the streets has absolutely no fear factor, seriously bro you can do better then what you did.
  • The only four things I loved about this version were how he goes into the audience, Audra as the Beggar Woman, Emma as mrs Lovett, and Christian as pirelli
  • No, I have seen other videos from the operatic stage where this guy A-C-T-S, he’s one of the best actors in the opera scene. Don’t know what happened here.
