Talking Domane -Seat post binder issues.

Published 2022-04-19
Welcome to "Talking Domane" today we're going to discuss a seatpost binder bolt issue that I had on my SL5 and we'll look at the cable housing guide under the stem. I owned this bike since June 2020 and in Oct 2021 I went to make an adjustment of the seatpost as I made a for-aft adjustment. The binder bolt was so seized I thought I was going to break the wrench. It freed and I made the adjustment and tightened to spec. 5 min later I went to tweak it again and it wouldn't move at all. I must of had to put 40nm of force and the bolt would not take it. I took the bike to the local Trek and the manager pretended to not even know me "was this bike even sold here" he replied.
I expressed concern, and questions. He said in front of new customers looking to buy a bike - "Don't worry Dan you will be taken care of, you wont have to pay anything" I left the bike, the mechanic used a "easy out" screw extractor and replaced the binder mech. When I went to pick it up the manager went back on his word and charged me. I got quite angry and we had and exchange of words, he claimed I made it all up, and every time I come in there it's always a problem. Fact is 3 times I was in there they sold/ordered or was missing a part they sold me. I said I would make a complaint to head office, he then decided to waive the charge. Well 1.5 hours later the post started slipping and wobbling around. Just to get an idea of the type of guy he is when I picked up my bike he said oh your tire is flat, and offered to sell me sealant.

At that point I had wrote a letter to Trek head office, they did not comment on the incident but rater if there was anything they could do for me on the "tech support side" they would be happy to help. Shortly after they started a warranty process and I took the bike to a different shop and they handled it professionally. Unfortunately the replacement post slipped after a couple of hours and had rocking issues. I wrote in again to the rep and contacted the shop, they then replied shortly after stating they would replace the frameset. It is unfortunate that I had a bad experience locally with my Trek store especially because it is close to home, but the event was isolated. I recommend Trek bikes and the customer service and warranty has always been great, despite having a problem with my frame I am told there was a very limited number that had this issue. I would still buy this bike again without a second thought.

I would encourage you to check and adjust and clean your binder bolt every 6 months to make sure it is in good working order. Please hit the like and subscribe button and stay tuned for the next build of the Domane SLR prismatic black.

Had a similar issue with my '22 Domane SL5. Seat post dropped on a ride. Thankfully the Trek store nearby was very helpful but I ended up needing a longer seat post...$270 later. Glad they hooked you up.
  • Hi Danny, I found your channel searching for "Domane seat post slipping". Your critical review was really helpful to have confirmed my concerns ! Let me introduce my story. I bought 6 weeks ago a DOMANE SL6 3rd generation (assumed to be 2021or 2022 model) in size 52. The bike was used by the owner of a LBS, official TRek retailor. During the check in the shop, I was mainly focusing about the Saddle height (my size is 72cm, close to the maximum allowed by the standard seat post). I rode bike to home for 30km, and few days after, starting my first ride, I felt saddle too low: it was down about 2cm. Moved up in the right place, torqued to the factory advised 7Nm and started: after 10km it slipped slowly down. I went to the LBS claiming the situation, the owner cleaned completely the post, put carbon paste on it and screwed it in place, telling me that the advised torque was not effective. GOing home no slipping happened; I was cuyrios to check the torque, and using a Park tool beam wrench I found the value was 13 Nm at least ! Now the slipping issue seems solved, but when I ride the bike after 40/50 km the rear Isospeed zone is creaking loud with every bump.... this is annoying but the real question is: could this overtorque damage the frame ? What could you or other kind readers advise ?

Thank you for showing this. I’ve been struggling with the seat post on my Domane SL5 since I bought it last November. I’m going to take it apart and clean it and hope that it fixes the annoying clicking noise.

Had problem with Checkpoint also. Frame itself defective; had to be replaced.

Picked up my 2022 Domane SL7 on Wed (7/6) and only 2 days later I am having the very same issue. Called the shop where I bought it and they had no idea what the issue could be. I drove 90 minutes to get it and don’t want to drive that far to get it serviced. They recommended I go to authorized Trek dealer. I planned on going there this morning until I saw your video. It seems this is an issue and I’m certainly not going to take the time to go to the local authorized dealer. I am going to call the shop and discuss this issue with them they were very nice and I believe they will be helpful. It is a Trek manufacturer owned store so let’s hope I get the same treatment you receive. Love the bike, but SOOO disappointed!!

I had the same problem on my sl5. Warranty replaced. The new frame had the same issue on the first ride. Trek then upgraded me to an slr frame which I’m grateful for. I’m starting to hear a click now though, 1200km in……I hope it’s not happening again. Oh and, just take that cable wrangler off. I’ve never used it.

same here trek madone lateral movement seatpost

I am experiencing the exact same issue with the seatpost binding on the Domane SL5. It has a lot of lateral movement with little pressure and slips so much making it basically unrideable. I've had the bike about a month and am going to take it in this week to LBS to see what they say, and if they can't resolve, will contact Trek about the issue. Good video, thanks for posting.
  • Interesting video. Just had the seatpost replaced under warranty on mine. Would drop randomly whilst riding. Unfortunately for me bought the bike in early 2020, just before COVID, so didn't ride it much apart from the odd turbo trainer session. Then had an accident in October 20221 another bike which meant I was off riding for fourteen months. I started riding again in December, and it got progressively worse. Fair play to the local Trek store though. No questions asked, tried to repair as per Trek Service notes, that failed so they did the warranty on the seatpost. Haven't had a proper ride on it yet but will keep an eye on it,

Dealing with the same issue here - Domane SL6 (2021) ... TREK issued a Service Bulletin on this matter a while ago. Sent the bicycle to the retailer and the procedure did not solve the problem, made it even worse as it started slipping more and faster. They will replace, under warranty, the seatpost for a long version of it. I doubt it will make any difference. Looks like they are beating around the bush instead solving a known problem. Very frustrating - especially when you consider the price of the bicycle - not even wallmart quality bikes would give so much trouble to have a problem solved.
  • I'm looking at this bike. I was curious have you noticed any squeaking or noises coming from the ISO system? I've heard a few complaints about this. Thanks for sharing
  • Is this Danny?!? Saskia from Bowen Island here with my 2021 Trek Domane SL 6 and I found this great video searching for the prob of the seat slipping down so much that I cant access the bolt to adjust seat height. Should I take it to BSP or just call Trek? Seat post is def too low now…
  • @brentpowell7017
I've got the same issue on an SL6 Gen4. It's been at the Trek company shop now for two weeks, and they're telling me it's going to be another 4 weeks due to backorder on the parts. I suspect I may also get a replacement frame in the end. We'll see. Bike only had about a 1000 miles on it when this started, but I've got the dropping seatpost, and lateral movement when riding. Feels like it's going to break maybe.
  • I had a seat post problem on my Domane SL5, the seat post would randomly drop. Every time it was the locking screw becoming loose - several times on each journey. Recommend screw thread loc-tite made no difference, so used a stronger one. It’s been ok since but I’m concerned as to what may happen when I need to undo it.
  • @KimsFakeName
Man all these comments are making me nervous. I just bought an 2023 SL6 4 weeks ago. We've had a lot of rain so I've only been able to put 160 miles on it. I know they removed the Isospeed from the front of the bike, but still have it at the seat post on the 23s. Im hoping this means they also improved the seatpost design. 🤞
  • @ravenmoto5948
Major flaw in this design. I've had issues with mine, took it in and they messed with it. Rode today and hit small bump seat post dropped. I raised it back tightened it, rode few miles, hit small bump and it dropped again. Taking it to Trek today, I'm sick of this problen!
  • I experience the same problem. Lateral movement creating a tick. Ik is reproducable frame let to righ. Trek Rotterdam replacement my SL6 for an SLR frame. Unfortunately the problemen remains. I am no technician but it seems that the seatpost does not fit (to small). What is wrong with it in your opinion?
  • Thx for your video! Sad it’s an issue on a almost $3500 bike. I have a 21 Domane SL5. Looking for a “how adjustment seat height video”. Expected it to be simple and straightforward but don’t see the bolts. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Would appreciate any help or feedback on How To.
  • @Aureas133
I bought a Domane a year ago, and almost immediatly traded it in for an emonda (thank fk my LBS has this 14-day return policy). I Noticed the seatpost was indeed wobbly, and i just couldnt get over the rattling of the storage cover. The design of the seatpost is very poor; even if it didnt wiggle; why is there a huge gap? Anyone who has ever ridden in the rain knows how their seatpost ends up... That gunk will ALL accumulate inside the seat tube. The emonda is a dream, but I think the designteam of the domane should lay off the hard drugs for a day or two
  • @billkahler
Put a little lube on the bolt, wipe it off so there’s just a trace. You will then be able to turn the bolt and more easily get the right pressure to hold the seat. It’s an amazing and simple trick. Works on microphone stands too.
