This tutorial covers the basic guidelines for facial proportions. Learning where features are placed on the face and how to use our pencil as a measurement tool allows us to create more accurate portraits.

In this video, I am using a plain old HB pencil! Try to stay within the HB-2B range for general sketching. Too hard of a graphite (the higher the H, the harder the graphite) is really light and can indent the paper easily if you press too hard. The higher the B, the softer the graphite, which will create darker marks!

You can teach an old dog new tricks. You just proved it! So true about artists missing the hair in front of the ear. This old dog learned a lot. Thanks!

I needed this lesson so badly. I’m taking art classes for the first time at the age of 60. My teachers talk about where to put the mouth but no one ever says THE BOTTOM of the mouth. They must assume I heard it in grade school.

I watched this while sitting in front of a mirror. My ears start at mid-eye and end about the top of my upper lip. My mouth, with "resting" face, is the width between the inside of the irises. Now I should try a self-portrait sketch. Also impressed that it was all done with the infamous 2H pencil. (Geez! And I went out and got a set of "drawing" pencils, yesterday!
