How do romances in romantic comedies compare to real life? What’s your favorite ‘90s romcom?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are doing a blast from the past by watching and ranking ‘90s romcoms. They’re ranking the romances from Clueless, Never Been Kissed, Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, and While You Were Sleeping. Jonathan ranks them from worst to best in terms of relationship quality, and Alan makes snide remarks about the quality of the films - though some of them are great - and he really goes off one one of them. Can you guess which one?

The fact that the teacher in Never Been Kissed thinks she's a minor for most of the movie should put it at the bottom of the list for that reason alone
  • I'm German and I remember my mum ranting about Hollywood romcoms one day back in the 90ies when I was a teenager. She sat me down and said: "Americans might believe this is what love is about, but here in Germany actually falling in love isn't the story and isn't the complicated part, the story starts at the wedding and is nothing like those films. It's about accepting that your partner isn't perfect and about respecting yourself and each other as people. This stuff is like food from MC Donald's and true love is like grandma's roast pork with red cabbage and dumplings."😂

"love is a commitment, not an action" YES
  • @OnWriting.
    The editing during Alan's rant I cannnn't 🤣🤣🤣

The hero of this video was the editor who so flawlessly illustrated the scope and magnitude of Alan's anger. Chef's kiss.

I am LIVING for Alan's pure rage at Never Been Kissed. Literally the highlight of my day, thank you 😂💀

While You Were Sleeping is my all time favorite romcom. It’s a Christmas movie to me and I watch it several times a year. I love Lucy and Bill Pullman together—but better yet, I LOVE THE FAMILY, the neighbors, the coworkers, the things that happen while Peter is sleeping, Chicago, I’m in NYC and it makes me nostalgic about Christmas lights seen from apartment windows, the winter, the Christmas Tree she pulls up the window. I love that it ended being ranked no. 1 on here.
  • The first time my husband went out of town I missed him so much I bought French kiss, Dirty Dancing and Dances with Wolves. He passed recently and I miss him in every way people show love. In everyday moments. He taught me a lot and is why I have love for anything at all. He is my best friend and I miss him.

In Clueless, Josh has this talk with Cher, after the stressed lawyer scolds her and says she’s destroyed her father’s case. What Josh says there, shows how Josh sees her good heart, he sees how she tries to take care of everyone. It’s not just that she’s cute, he sees her good core.

Just as Alan finished his rant, a firetruck and ambulance drove past my house and it was perfect.
  • I watch While you were sleeping every year while I decorate my Christmas tree. Her story of being alone and falling in love with the whole family mirrors mine… I love the scene where they are opening presents and she’s just watching them, just drinking in the interactions. And then you see a stocking with her name on it . Such a wonderful feeling. It’s less about two people and more about finding your village.

"Growing into a version of you that was always in there" is so beautiful and powerful!

Thanks so much for your "Never Been Kissed" rant, Alan! Teacher/Student relationships always make me uneasy, especially if they're romanticised. It doesn't matter if Sam and Josie are both adults around the same age, he THOUGHT that she was his underage student for all the time he knew her, meaning that their entire relationship was based on a lie. He also had a girlfriend, and I don't think that it was mentioned if they'd broken up or not. Sam actually compliments Josie at one point, then adds, "Actually, I shouldn't say that, BECAUSE I'm your teacher."

I suspect the reason for the (lingering) darkness in the Pretty Woman script is that it wasn’t meant to be a romantic comedy to begin with. I also don’t see their relationship quite as one-sided. On paper Vivienne is the one that needs saving, but really she isn’t broken. He is. She lives in bad circumstances, yes, but Edward can’t hold down a relationship, does a horrible job, has all the money in the world, but no idea how to enjoy it… The nastiness of the fight shows the difference between them quite well. She is a lot more mature in many ways. And she’s absolutely willing to walk away until he digs into his feelings and gives her a proper apology. In the end, too, he tries to “buy” her to stay in his life, but it’s not what she wants, so she walks away. He has to get over himself to deserve her. Really it’s a story of personal growth as well.

You do know Clueless is an adaptation of Emma by Jane Austen, right? When you learn about the production it's the latest pull to have this attached to your heart forever

I would watch While You Were Sleeping over and over as a little girl. I introduced the movie a couple years ago to my daughter and she's just as obsessed. Now we watch it together. It's a great mommy/daughter movie.

Props to the editing team for how they handled that Alan Meltdown xD
