Exploring Minecraft's Liminal Pools and Abyss (Neverend Ambience and Visuals)

Recently, I've been coding a custom Minecraft liminal pool and abyss horror dimension called Neverend to keep a secret on Content SMP, and despite me and other YouTubers making videos on it, none of them really showcase the ambience and the visuals well. So here's one specifically dedicated to the feel of the dimension!

I don't know why, but the idea of making a hole in an end portal frame and shoving a heart of the sea into it to make the portal lead elsewhere reminds me of that "Please, don't touch anything" game

I was shocked about how few people were talking about the ambiance in these nightmare pools, it's truly incredible

Honestly, I now think more mods should have ambience-deticated videos.

this video is in the same category as videos with dancing veggies for kids. same vibe i'm getting, i even forgot that i was eating ice cream. R4T, you did a great job with this mod.

god this dimension is so damn cool, i would honestly kill to write an original piece of fiction based on it someday. thank you for this video!!! the ambience and visuals are amazing

I feel like I can actually taste the chlorine and feel the damp air in my skin in the upper levels… and then my chest tightened in the abyss level. Phenomenal ambience I was immersed the whole way through!

Honestly, I really hope the idea behind the “end portal frame hole” gets expanded upon. Because the idea of being able to access entirely new dimensions by placing something in said hole sounds awesome. And also, I love this Poolrooms dimension. Genuinely so cool, and I love how genuinely tense / terrifying Level 3 is / can be.
  • This mod is amazing. I think the few months (I hope it won't be longer) we have to wait until it's public will be worth it.

I feel like a lot backroom/liminal space-like games fail to actually make you feel the off feeling you usually would get in liminal spaces. And despite this just being minecraft graphics, it's absolutely amazingly done. I usually don't set my expectations too high whenever I see attempts of the backrooms/liminal space in minecraft, but wow this really just- it's so so good?? I would love to see more of what you can do with these kind of ambience. I'm like on my knees, this is genuinely so cool

I think it would be funny if, when no one online is in the dimension or no one is in the dimension, online or offline, with an auger, it generates a new dimension with a new random seed

i absolutely love how level three takes over an incredibly deep abyss, reminds me a small bit of the Utility Room.

I still can't get over how much time you've put into this mod, I'm a sucker for good ambience. This was a delight to watch and to listen to the ambience. That made my brain produce happy chemicals. Thanks for this Rat! :3
  • honestly, huge props to rat for being able to consistently make original content for so long. as a modder myself i know how much time and brains go into making mods and it's impressive how all of these mods in the videos are such high quality from the get go.
  • A while ago I read a short paragraph on how music can change how something feels, like playing a clip of a shark with the jaws tune vs the song happy Ever since then I've been thinking about why the sound design of games I play was made to be like it is. I feel like the poolrooms ambience are the perfect embodiment of liminality, making it sound like you're all alone, just in some childlike dream world where everything goes nowhere and nowhere is everywhere
  • @yezitet
It would be nice if the code changes between worlds so it's not the same for everyone
  • I never realized how delightful the sonar ping sound was, especially the way you have it attenuate as you move away from the scanner, and how it fades completely just as you start to transition back to the overworld. chef kiss masterpiece.

This truly is your magnum opus! Its gotta be one of the coolest Minecraft mods I've ever seen. I have a question... Are there by chance custom cave sounds? Cause just imagine how terrifying it would be walking through those liminal spaces and just hearing a clang of metal, or a skittering noise, or a splash of water... As if you aren't alone in these halls, but no matter how hard you look you will never find whatever made the noise! Also it would be so cool if the dinging noise (as seen here: 17:04) would attract all of the nearby angler fish (I forgot what they were called sadly) to that location, forcing the player to hurry away from it!
