Yamamoto is probably one of if not the most brilliant naval strategist in history. From accurately predicting the entire war to making some brilliant gambles which truly were japans best chance at victory. Most importantly he essentially created the modern navy. Yamamoto is the man responsible for making the carrier the most important ship in the navy. He is not only a brilliant admiral but also the master, inventor and father of carrier warfare.

“For the first 6 to 12 months of a war with the United States I will run wild, winning victory after victory. But then, if the war continues after that, I have no expectation of success.” - Yamamoto. That man knew exactly what the US was capable of bringing to bear if given enough time.

Why politicians should listen to their generals and admirals.

  • "Boys, I think we f*cked up."~Emperor Hirohito, 8 December 1941.
  • Mako, the actor who portraied him is one of my favourite actors. He was fantastic in the first Conan movie. Just now I discovered he passed. Now the warrior rest in peace.

"I can lead you to war, but not to victory." - Admiral Yamamoto

He actually predicted it would last 6 months. And it poetically did last 6 months to the day, June 7th 1942, the end of the Battle of Midway that had cost Japan 4 fleet carriers

The admiral was 100℅ right. I also like that scene in the Pearl Harbor movie when he explains his plans to the high command. Asked for his opinion about the chances of success, he looks up to the kids playing with the kites nearby, before answering. He knew what was coming for them all if they attack.

Yamamoto on Dec. 8, 1941: "T F YOU MEAN WE DIDN'T GET THE CARRIERS?!?"
  • He was a pioneer and genius, he knew their only hope was either to cripple them quick or cause a hasty surrender, failing to do both, with the US's resilience, manpower and resources and strength, they would recover quickly, Plus failing to hit the repair yards was great for the us too, He knew the failure because he understood the us better than most in japan
  • He said 6 months of uncontested pacific control 6 months after Pearl Harbour the battle of midway
  • "If we fuck around, we are going to find out." - Admiral Yamamoto (probably)

Unfortunately Japanese Generals like Tojo and many others were warmongering maniacs Admiral Yamamoto was the reasonable sane voice and he was constantly under threat of assassination by the more militarists in Japan.

“For six months I will run rampant across the pacific, after that I make no promises” Yamamoto

Just one of the reasons why 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' is a much better film.
  • My Dad enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps the day after the attack on Pearl Harbour.

Sun Tsu " Know your enemy, know your self" he knew they couldn't win, Japan's military hierarchy didn't listen
