2018/2019 Mazda6 Turbo | Can It Compete?

Published 2018-07-18
It's been a while since Mazda offered a turbo engine in their flagship sedan but the wait is now over. In addition to swiping the 2.5L turbo engine from the CX-9, Mazda decided to bring us a new top-end trim with improved interior materials, real wood trim and more. Just don't call it a Mazda Millenia.

EDIT: Since this video was filmed Mazda has released CarPlay and Android Auto support for the infotainment system. We will be shooting an updated video on that ASAP.

Going head-to-head with the new V6 Camry and 2.0L turbo Accord is no small matter, and here is where the Mazda lets us down just a little. But with solid good looks, excellent driving dynamics and more power than before it's still worth a look.

(And before you ask, yes, in America it's Mah-z-dah. AKA the way Mazda pronounces their own name on this continent. The moment Mazda makes commercials where they pronounce their name as they do across the pond, I'll adapt my pronunciation.)

Lexus/Toyota need to hire the guy who designed the Mazda grill. LOL

The Mazda's styling surpasses that of Toyota and Honda by a long shot. It's simple yet elegant while I think Toyota's almost going to the extreme to make their cars look futuristic. I think you described it best by calling the Camry's styling "polarizing"

Yeah, after 3 months of research and test driving against all the competitors and higher-priced options like the Stinger and AuDi A4/A6 I purchased the 6 sig. While Camry and Accord have aspects that maybe "better" than Mazda. The sum of the Mazda's parts and design make it a better car. Also a lot to be said for Mazda's design/engineering capability when an almost 6 year old design can stay competitive with BRAND NEW designs from appliance manufacturers. Also cannot agree with your opinion on tranny. I found the Accord and Camry tranny hunted alot, while Mazda did not. And exactly what interior parts felt of better quality in the Camry? I found the Camry plastics and large front doors to feel lightweight and cheap. Mazda felt more solid. And I cannot get by the Accord's beak. Personally, you don't buy the Mazda for numbers, you buy it for how it feels to drive. Number lie when compared to real-world experience. Anyway, to each there own.

Not gonna lie, Alex sounds like the Mazda reps kicked his dog.

I just test drove the new Signature Mazda 6 today. It was such a fantastic car to drive. Very fun. Good power and good delivery of power. Suspension could be suppler. Interior look is top notch. Interior storage is questionable. But very fun to drive with a big trunk. No incentive for cash purchase now. So we didn't buy it. My wife and I both love it so much. Great car!

The biggest issue with Mazda (in the USA) isn't the products, they are generally excellent, but the poor dealer network. If I could suggest one of the most critical things they could improve on would be the dealer experience, mechanical shop service competence and professionalism. Mazda if you fix this, you'll quickly gain a lot of new customers!

I always find it amusing when he puts himself in the trunk. Like he's gearing up to carry a body in one.

It’s not always about which is faster. Honda and Toyota are plain in and out in my opinion. Mazda gives you more for the money always have and always will.

Mazda simply allowed some room to improve performance on future models, same way Apple holds back a few features with each new iPhone release. That big 2.5t engine could wipe out Honda's 1.5t in acceleration if they wanted to go that route, they just chose the "around town" tune where diesels usually shine, as in shooting that gap in traffic going 40-60mph. If i were buying a midsized sedan today it would be the 6, not just because i like the way it looks versus the competition, but also to support Mazda..the little car company that may just extend the shelf life of internal combustion engines with their SkyactivX.

Thanks Alex!! I appreciate all the effort Mazda went to upgrade the interior furnishings....but so many opportunities still present themselves! I have a client that gave me a ride in his 2017 top trim 6 and I found the front seat so short in cushion length! Hopefully that was fixed for this year. We have 2 Optimas and the 2012 and 2017 SXL seem so much more comfortable. No real wood in ours but I'll take the feisty 2.0 turbo and 36 MPG (hwy) all day long!
  • @hunzacc
I drive the 2.5L (not turbo) version as a daily commuter, my fuel economy is 30.95 MPG (20% city, 80% highway@70-75 mph).

Just helped a friend buy a new Mazda6 with the manual transmission. Love the styling and very impressed with the interior. Ride and handling reminded me of the old E36 and E46 3 series BMW's.
  • @bigcjm
Alex. Like your channel but you are wrong about taking tire width over tire compound. If you put better gripping tires on a car it does was more for handling than width. Motor trend did a video on this years ago. Better tire compound beats a slightly wider mediocre tire everyday.

Been waiting for this video for a while. No one I trust more than Alex to give me a legitimate review with cross segment comparisons.
  • Thanks for the review Alex !! As a Mazda fan and owner of a 3 sport myself I personally feel that one thing Mazda can offer is adaptive suspension! With the driving dynamics similar to a luxury sport car brands, good looks and adaptive suspension for comfort it will be one of the best. Thanks people:) I will be buying a 2020 6 signature soon:)

The camry center console is too wide and hard plastic. Very uncomfortable for tall people. I like how the mazda 6 got padded material and narrower center console.

Great video. Packed with a ton of technical data. Thanks for sharing!
