Rebuilding idler wheels off tracked tractor

Published 2024-07-07
In this video I rebuild and repair idler wheels from a Trax master tracked tractor.
The idler wheels had run out of oil and had destroyed the bearings and also the shaft that holds the wheel on. The customer had managed to find some new wheels but unfortunately, they were the wrong overall diameter, they were unable to find the ones the right diameter so a repair was needed on the old wheels.
After knocking the old bearings out, it turns out the centre bores weren’t too badly damaged. One side of one of the wheels had damaged where the circlip groove was but the other was okay.
The damaged wheel was put in the 4 jaw chuck in the lathe and over bored, it was then rebuilt back up with weld and the circlip groove was re cut.
The wheels could then be rebuilt with the new parts out of the wheels that were too small, luckily the parts were interchangeable with a bit of modifying to the shafts.
My new Siegmund 8.7 extreme system 28, 3 x 1.5m fixture table also arrived this week so that was unpacked and put together. Already came in useful for these wheels.

Hope you enjoyed the video

Oliver, I think your new table will be a great asset to your shop. I am 81 yrs. old and worked around machinery and equipment many years here in West Texas, but I learn a lot watching you work. You are a very skilled young man and great to watch.

Nice table! Never put yourself down, you don't do yourself justice it would have been a brave person to take that job on in the 1st place. Can't understand why people don't take the time to check their equipment, it saves a whole lot of money and time. Kurtis over at CEE also hates it when he gets parts that are dirty, I don't think customers realise that, you spending the time cleaning all adds to how much the job costs. 👍

Love how your dad randomly pops up now and again .I miss mine and i know if i had my time again with him and a shop like yours we would have such a great time tinkering and repairing things . Congratz on the welding table .Maybe a new bigger lathe next? Think Those round magnetic things are for round bar holding

Congratulations on new welding table! It's a thing straight from a fairy tale: both a beauty and a beast!

That's a cracking welding table. Must have set you back quite a few bucks. It will last you a literal lifetime.
  • Given there were 4 holes in that disc, I think I'd have stuck the chuck jaws in there for better stability / rigidity... 🤔 Nice vid ! 🤗 😎👍☘🍻

I remember cutting firewood like that about 30y ago, minus all the shielding for safety 🥴 that brought back some childhood memories. The new fixture table looks ace, hope it works well for you for many many years.
  • It’s great you are getting all different types of engineering and fabrication work now, Onwards and upward Ollie 🇬🇧🇮🇪.

What a well executed 'fix' for a knackered piece. I hope the customer was 'very' pleased you saved them a fortune. A gantry crane would be a good edition to save your back. 👍

A monumental achievement making what can be bought cheaply fit what you have. Ingenuity at the highest level. Respect to you. Ten out of ten. Everyone can learn from this type of thinking.

That’s another save for one of your clients! It many shops would do the type of detailed engineering modifications that you undertake to keep old stuff working. Nice add with the fabrication jig table .

Nice to see you are buying new stuff for your work shop this will make your life easer in the long run

A well earned new table. Excellent repair on the wheels. Running large work reminded me of family members turning prop shafts for ships and my victorian great uncle who consulted on the original Forth Bridge; he was a naval architect/engineer. I am suprised you have not yet been asked to help with steam locomotive repair. They need people with your level of skill and thoughtfulness when handling old machinery. Thank you for posting.

Oliver, as an ol' man now, I can only remember the joy of each new tool that I added to the shop! Each one brought new learning, and opportunities, and raised my skill level a bit more. Congratulations on you continuing success. Keep the faith, keep a steady hand, and always have hope. Life is a journey, enjoy every step! PS: Your stick welding is perfect, in that any cast iron repair that is successful is a home run!
  • Well done on the new table score Ollie. Onwards and upwards brother 👍

You are an exceptionally talented person. Congratulations on the new addition of an Esco table.

Congratulations with your new welding table. What a great investment for making fabrication jobs easier to do.
  • Nice new fixture table, Snowy! You're going to need a bigger shop soon!

Great new welding table, the clamping features will cut down setting up time greatly. Grease will adequately lubricate without oil, could have plugged the grub screw and drilled into the passageway from edge face to add grease nipple. Tractor pull was fantastic.
