Eve Online for the past 20 years has been the number 1 most popular sci fi space sandbox MMORPG, this game initially released all the way back in May 2003 and over the years has not only gone through numerous updates to keep itself up to date with other MMOs visually, but it’s also a game that’s fostered some of the most legendary battles and stories ever to have taken place in the MMO genre.

Just to name a few epic moments in Eve Online you had the battle of B-R5RB, a 21 hour long war in which 7,500 players battled it out and nearly 11 trillion ISK worth of ships were destroyed.
The Massacre at M2-XFE which held two Guinness world records with $378,000 worth of ships being destroyed.

What do you think about Eve Online in 2023? Is this game still the number 1 sci-fi MMORPG? should new players start playing today? let me know in the comments below!

Watching him build a character hes never gonna see again is peak eve

This is a perfect example of what new players feel when they come into the game and why most of them leave without discovering the game. Great vid btw.
  • @swisssora5034
The reason the game has a good character creator was because there actually was plans for you to walk around the station or spaceships called 'walking in stations' and back in 2019 you could walk around a single point at a station overlooking your spaceship but no one used this feature because it was slower then the other overview so it was scrapped

Eve combat seems really simple at first, almost AFK, but once you get into more complex engagements you start to realize there is a LOT to keep track of. Your damage is based on a whole bunch of factors, such as enemy resistances vs. your ammo/weapon damage type, your range to the target, your transversal velocity compared to weapon tracking, your signature radius (how big your ship is compared to enemy weapons), and that's before taking into account things like EWAR and capacitor management. You can kill battleships with frigates if you fly and fit your ship correctly, even though the battleship has way higher DPS and defenses, as it's possible to get "under" the battleship's guns with a frigate where your small size and fast speed prevents the battleship from hitting you at all. So while PvE combat tends to be pretty chill, PvP combat is one of the most intense gameplay types in any game, and has actual stakes because you permanently lose your ship (and sometimes pod) if you lose. The "more powerful ship" thing is countered by the fact that more powerful ships are more *expensive*, which means when you eventually lose them (and you will) all you do is run out of money faster. Lots of very rich and very veteran players will fly cheaper ships in PvP just so they can afford to keep doing so. As for the P2W thing, Eve is referred to as "P2L" or "Pay to Lose." You can get isk and training via RL money, but if you don't actually know how to fly the stuff you bought, you'll just go out and promptly lose it all. Most veteran players fund their fleets and PvP ships using purely in-game methods, often buying extra accounts from the "P2W" guys who end up feeding their blingy ships. The game also doesn't have any actual end game or objective, so "winning" is always going to be relative. Many people find flying capital ships as "winning" whereas even after 15+ years of gameplay I never want to touch the darn things.

The best advice for any new eve player is to join one of the many player corporations specialized in training/helping out new people. EvE University is a great start.
  • @torgrim123
I played EVE from release to 2014, had such a blast, fond memories, near heart attack PVP, fun being pirate and sad sometimes, so much, I will always miss the times I had in the game.
  • @TheCopiumClinic
I’m really grateful for how Eve has pushed the envelope for MMOs in terms of its game scale and economy.
  • @NoobVisions79
Took me 6 months to really get into game and then I really fell in love. Played hardcore for 3 years, and had a blast.... and then also had enough. Was great and I often miss it.
  • @justinpeterson7246
Combat gets nuts and very sweatypalm intense as the stakes rise and your tech and ships/weapons/midd avaliable get further in. It is NOT an afk game but that is definitely something you think at first
  • @leetheman9921
As a long time eve player, I'm actually really glad to see you step into this and give it a go, fresh perspective on one of my all time favourite games is great to see. I think you pretty much nailed it in regards to the pros but I would of liked to see a bit more of your analytical look into the cons, but as you say, it probably would of required a longer look into the game and if it just isn't your thing, its hard to trudge through for the sake of it.
  • @silentotto5099
I've never played the game, but over the years I've seen some videos outlining the happenings in the game amongst the various factions and their power struggles. It was like seeing an alternate history of the universe and was fascinating.
  • Its a social MMO, new player exprience is rough when critical tools are not utilized. The critical tool is communication. I recommend asking people for help! Every seasoned player will do their best to help you understand the core systems and find your way in this ultimate sandbox. The effort makes the experience endearing and its worth it. The game can be as AFK but also adrenaline fuel when you venture out.

One of the main things which you weren't introduced to was the concept of ship roles, and the tradeoffs of choosing a larger ship. Pretty much every ship has stats, bonuses, and a slot layout that favors a specific role. Just the combat roles include close-range "brawling," long-range "sniping" or "kiting," logistics (space-heals), fast or hard tackle (holding ships in place), EWAR (applying debuffs), and Links (applying buffs). These roles can be used in conjunction with each other to make a set of ships into far more than the sum of their parts. We call these sets of ships Doctrines, which are created by players and change over time with the game. You mentioned in your video a fear that combat would simply turn into a case of the bigger ship winning. A combination of stats encompassing two concepts called Application and Projection work to counteract this. Application describes how capable a ship is of applying damage to another. While not a hard and fast rule, generally larger, longer range weapons either apply less damage to or find it harder to hit smaller, closer, and faster moving targets. Projection describes a ship's ability to maneuver around the battlefield and position itself optimally. Again not a hard and fast rule, but generally larger ships are slower to turn, and have slower sublight and warp speeds. These mechanics allow smaller ships to threaten targets several classes larger than them, and is also why despite having PLEX (the item which WoW Tokens and Runescape Bonds were based on), it would be difficult to classify Eve as Pay-to-Win.
  • @lordcorgi6481
I love Eve Online. I also love Amarr so I can scream out "FIRE THE LASER!" Combat gets much much more frenetic later when you're trying to control 6 targets and 10 weapons and drones.
  • @erik-martin
You gave Eve a fair chance. This is what happened to me when I first started back in 2009. Came back a few months later and got hooked for a few years. Then for the next 11 years (2010 to 2021) I played thousands of hours as I kept coming back for more. Last year I realized my family and life was more important than this game I had sunk a large portion of my adult life into. I still look back fondly at all the experiences I had and the friends I made. This game defined my twenties.
  • @eddiebrock2803
Eve was always a stunning game. Visually, incomparable to anything out there, even from way back when. Technically, you've got literally HOURS of learning to do to even SCRATCH the surface; there used to be a 'meme' of the 'learning curve' of games in comparison. Eve's point was a dead-drop massive cliff. :P There are THOUSANDS of systems to explore, there are MILLIONS of random encounters with everything from faction N.P.C.'s to random pirates (and even an ALIEN!), you can build, or mine, or fight to make money... It's really REALLY in-depth. C.C.P. has done an INCREDIBLE job of upgrading, and updating a beautiful game, and really making it something role-players and combat-freaks can love through two decades... ...not bad for a psychology project by a bunch of students. HOWEVER... ...the only people still in Eve are the desperate hangers-on... ...and PSYCHOPATHS. That's right. You see, Eve Online is a money-driven slaughterhouse. You don't get to 'chill' anywhere in Eve. Well, you CAN, if you never undock. They don't tell you that in the description, do they? Or the in-game motto, 'Undocking means you consent to P.v.P.' . (that's literal; there is NO safe place in Eve Online, ANYWHERE. don't let ANYONE tell you different). YES, it's ILLEGAL to shoot someone in high-security space... ...which they work around by having 'suicide' shooters who gun you down, after their spotter (a scanner) checks to see what you have. Meh. Maybe they kill you because they're bored. No reason at all. The 'law' isn't there to ENFORCE the law, they're there to AVENGE you in the NAME of the law. They come along and just blow up the offender. Of course, as the sector SECURITY rating drops (from 1.0 to -0.something) they appear SLOWER, and less frequently (depending on sec level). ...so you're still gonna die, and lose all your stuff you were carrying. NOTE: this is an EMPLOYMENT tactic, used to make you join a corporation! More below... If you're not in a corporation, you WILL be soon enough. Be it a pirate group, whom will badger you while doing missions, or mining, threatening you, or stealing from you, all while taunting you to get you to join, goading you into ATTACKING them, and then they can LEGALLY fight you (or just sit back and laugh while CONCORD smacks you for attacking someone), or simply offering you EVERYTHING you could want as a new player (ships, money, parts, a place to be 'safe')... ...that's assuming they don't just tell you once you've joined them you're now a miner and you'll be spending the rest of the next few MONTHS mining for them... ...then to eventually become an 'F1-monkey' (all linked weapons are activated by pressing the F1 key...), sitting on a gate mindlessly waiting for a 'victim' to come through... Exploring? Sure! You can do that. In a huge fleet maybe. Never mind the hostile EVERYTHING in the lower-tier sectors, but those out to PROVE themselves (and 'extract tears') HUNT you in the stranger, less populated places (if you can get to them at all). Solo play? AhahaAhaAHAHaHaAHHA! Ya right. Maybe as an 'alt', mining in high-sec or something. And if you're not RICH, forget it. Eve is VERY expensive as a pay-to-play game. C.C.P. didn't amp them graphics for FREE bub. No, you'll pay a monthly fee. Don't want to? Well, you could WORK for it in-game. This means SLOGGING every day, doing missions, mining, whatever, JUST to get the in-game currency (which, by the way is purchasable for real money) PLEX, which will expand your monthly pay-in by one month for one. They run about a MILLION in-game credits a pop if you want to buy one like that. Not sure of the rates now. Bought some PLEX for cash and want to get some AWESOME toys?! Hey! Pay to win, right?! Nope. The rarer the stuff, the better it is. Also the more VALUABLE it is. As value goes up, the TARGET on your BACK gets bigger, and BIGGER and BIGGER! Ask the Italian lawyer who dumped six and a half grand (real cash) into the game for an awesome ship, parts, and some PLEX, who got blapped out of his ship the MOMENT he undocked, all his stuff got stolen, REBUILT it all, and got SCAMMED out of the second one, when a bunch of people said they'd move it 'safely' for him. C.C.P. CONDONES all this. This game was originally a psychology project to see what people would do if given free-reign. Early on, it wasn't so bad. It took a while to figure out 'ganking' tactics. player Corps weren't so money-crazy, and gestapo as they are now. Imagine gangs of thugs whom are rich, constantly battling each other... Eve has it's fun moments, but they are MASSIVELY overshadowed by the disappointments you'll face. It's a challenge just to get STARTED, and you'll constantly be pushed to 'join'. If you're a soloist, you're doomed. There's C.A.S. (Centre for Advanced Studies), a STARTER corporation that has for YEARS tried to HONESTLY help new players, and make a home for themselves in-world, and slowly, inevitably, been worn down. There's very few casual players in Eve. So Mr. LazyPeon, I agree with you; your beginner eyes are witnessing one of the most VISUALLY STUNNING space games out there. Get a good look, because a few years down the road, it'll just be blood red, smoke, and fire...
  • @tzunamy471
I'll never touch this game, though I'm always fascinated by it.
  • @thomasaguiar5910
"combat is not as complicated as I thought" That is part of the beauty of eve. The systems are easy to learn but mastering them takes a great deal of knowledge and skill.
  • @mattybob12310
Ah EVE, 10 years of my life, a second job, and a group of fantastic international friends, stuck with the same group throughout and had an absolute blast. We were the last Free C6 Corp during the Russian purge of high class wormhole space a few years ago, it ended in a bloodbath, of course we lost but it was an absolute blast!
