Watching Skins for the first time: Effy is one of the most enchanting, mysterious characters you can’t help to fall in love with. Now as an adult: a very sad child that didn’t get proper treatment, and would probably be very difficult to be around.
  • Both Effy and Tony are perfect examples of kids where the cool image they've drawn up is just a cover-up for a lot of insecurities and detachment within the family. Especially with Effy, there was an incapability of handling love because everyone loved her for all the wrong reasons, and not the person she truly was, except for Tony. She was enigmatic, but very troubled, but everyone was so enthralled by her image that it became toxic for her and the ones that loved her. To me, this show is one of the few shows to have realistic teenage characters with a lot of layers in the storylines, the third generation excluded (when the show sort of became a caricature of itself).

She suffered from selective mutism as a child (she stopped talking when she was 6 and this is mentioned in a deleted scene) and in her early teens, probably due to her family situation. Indeed, his parents were rather bigoted, superficial and careless. No one paid attention to her or cared about her except Tony, so she attracted attention like that.
  • she is the ultimate manic pixie dream girl, mutism with autistic behaviors while being wildly misread constantly and being neglected from everyone but tony. they see her as needing fixed

It's common for people who have had selective mutism to emulate the voices around them when they do speak. It's also a common symptom of a few mental health disorders including BPD which she very much shows symptoms of throughout the show. Her voice reflects those around her, it's another way to try and protect herself, likely without her even noticing.
  • In season 2 when she was being super posh its because she was putting the accent on to seem like she had everything together (because everything eas falling apart: tonys brain damage, parents marriage etc)

It is sad, just when Tony was ready to change, he lost it all. If he hadn't been put in a coma, I imagine he also would've helped Effy and they both could've had better lives.

the moment effy stops being mute: TONY GETS HIT BY A BUS

the way i tried to emulate her because i had a massive crush ..puberty was really something
  • Fun fact kaya scodelario was on,y 14 when she got the roll of effy and she lied about her age to get it because they only wanted 16+ for the roll because of all the stuff they have to do

I don’t know but I get the impression that people liked Effys aesthetic more than her as a person? Edit: Thanks for the 2k likes! Take care of your well-being and mental health❤️
  • I was 19 when Skins first came out and EVERYONE watched it. The music, the fashion and the promiscuity that was the fabric of the show was lived by so many of us at that time. When I take a trip down memory lane with videos like this, I can't help but think, wow, it really was shite wasn't it?!

Weirdly enough mine and my siblings accents changed in a similar way - when we were kids we all sounded very 'south london' / more working class, much like my Dads accent (Peckham born & bred). Once we got to our teens and spent more times with friends our accents became much more 'middle class' (we lived in quite an affluent area in the home counties)

Writing her is crazy because not only people in show idolise but people in real life also
