Any wood, highly degraded, and pre-punk works great for a hand drill fire board. We've all heard that Trumpet Vine, Willow, Cedar, Mulberry, Cottonwood, Basswood, etc make great fire boards, but even they will work better if slightly degraded.
I wanted to show you what I look for when searching the woods for an ideal fire board... Let me show you this great Tulip Poplar specimen that I found just the other day. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!

Great camera work showing the notch as the friction dust builds up to ignition and a nice view of the Mora technique for holding the fire board in place. Thanks Dave!

This is hands-down the best video on hand-drills. Has less to do with the wood type and more to do with its natural degradation....

Another great video, Dave. Refreshing to see someone so dedicated to quality.
  • Awesome David! Thanks for sharing your skillset and knowledge!
  • Cottonwood board and a cottonwood spindle work very nicely. If you can get a yucca stalk for a drill that's the best. Bird's nest of dry grass works very well. Inner bark from a cottonwood is mosst excellent!
