Pineapples used to be so expensive when they were first discovered by Europeans that only kings could have them, after a while when they were available to the high classes but still crazy expensive, you could rent pineapples to carry around. The reasoning behind this is if someone sees you with the pineapple they'll think you're rich when in fact you rented the pineapple and cannot eat it lol maybe that's where the swinging thing stemed from.

For the "safety" use cases I prefer plugs that also report power usage. That way I can have automation in place that if the device consumes like > 200W for more time than it should (like an hour) it turns off.
