Homegoing Celebration for Mr. Jerry Calhoun

Jerry Calhoun, born on September 11, 1933, in Tattnall County, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2024. He was the beloved son of the late Bishop Sam Joseph Calhoun and Louise Coley, and his stepmother, Mary Lizzie Calhoun, all of whom preceded him in death. Jerry met and married the love of his life, Delois Irene Guest, and together they built a strong and loving family, known affectionately as the "999 Calhoun Strong." Their union was blessed with eight wonderful children, creating a legacy of love, faith, and resilience. Delois also proceeded him in death.

In addition to his parents and wife, Jerry was preceded in death by other cherished family members, including his wife from his second marriage, Mildred J. Calhoun. Five grandchildren: Jamond Calhoun, Jermaine Calhoun, Semetria Calhoun, Tavoris Calhoun, and Byron Davis. One great-grandchild, DeShaun Davis. 5 Siblings: Doris Nunley, Pardine Coley, Gladys Lee, Delois Coley, and Catherine Coley. Two special friends: Mary Ann Davis and Gladys Mincey. His memory will live on through his loving family and the countless individuals whose lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.

A man of deep faith, Jerry joined Mt. Zion No. 1 Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. He served faithfully as a Deacon under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Donnell Benjamin until his health prevented him from continuing to be active. His commitment to his church and community was unwavering, and his spiritual guidance touched many lives. Jerry received his education in the old Negro School of Tattnall County, where he laid the foundation for a life of hard work and dedication. His passion for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies, which included hunting, fishing, and cheering for the Atlanta Braves.

Jerry’s professional life was marked by his industrious spirit and entrepreneurial drive. He began his career in pulp wooding and farming, eventually owning his own logging truck and hauling for Lacey Driggers Logging Co., Tatum Brothers Logging Co., and the Wilson Brothers Logging Co. Later, he proudly owned and operated Calhoun Logging Co., demonstrating his strong work ethic and leadership. During the summer months, Jerry took time off to farm for Mr. Raymond Bland, owner of Bland’s Farm, displaying his versatility and dedication to providing for his family.

Jerry Calhoun’s life was a testament to the power of love, hard work, and faith. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that Jerry is now at peace, reunited with those who have gone before him, and resting in the arms of his Savior.

Those left to cherish his memory: 14 children, Lois Mae Bacon, Jettie Mae Calhoun, Terry (Cynthia) Calhoun, Cheryl (Raymond) Manning, Sonnie Calhoun, Larry Calhoun, and Lillian (Willie) Walker all of Reidsville, Ga. Mary (Willie) Sellers of Atlanta, Ga. Calvin (Asheka) Guest, Shirley King, Linda (Dale) Thomas, Aubrey (Tammie) Davis, and Gregory Davis all of Glennville, Ga. Kenneth (Pam) Davis of Sacramento, CA. 5 step-children: Annette (Elis) McKinnon of Reidsville, Ga., George (Mary) Johnson, Linda Johnson, Billy (Zella)Johnson, and Ricky Johnson all of Glennville, Ga. 50 grandchildren, 147 great grandchildren, 12great-great grandchildren, a special friend, Herbert Smith of Reidsville; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
