Finland and Sweden are said to be considering a joint bid to join Nato despite fears of retaliation from Russia.

Stockholm and Helsinki have long pursued policies of military neutrality to avoid conflict with regional powers.

But, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said "everything had changed" when Russia attacked Ukraine and told reporters that Helsinki must to be "prepared for all kinds of actions from Russia".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stressed that Moscow would have to "rebalance the situation" with its own measures if the Nato bid went ahead.

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has said it would be "useful" for Sweden and Finland to launch joint Nato membership bids, but added that no fixed date had been set for any potential application.

The BBC's Ros Atkins explains the latest developments.

As a Finn I'm touched by all the support from around the world for our possible membership of NATO. Thank you, everyone, for your kind words.

As a Swede i have never been a huge supporter of Military Alliances but it might just be the right time considering current situation. About 60 percent of the Swedish people think that Sweden should join NATO if Finland joins.

Fun Fact: In Finland there's been three times more applications for gun licences in the last two months and private gun shops are running out of ammunition because the demand has been so huge. Also voluntary military courses have seen multiple times more people. I also received my first call to a compulsory military training after my mandatory military service..these calls have been happening a lot lately. That's what's happening in this peace loving country right now.
  • As a Swede, I never liked the idea of joining NATO. No one I know was in favor of joining just a couple months ago. But with Russia's (or more specifically Putin's) constant threats and war-mongering, we feel like we don't have a choice anymore. Even the people who don't like NATO are now in favor of joining. He's quite literally pushing us towards a membership.

We, Finns, are a peace loving democracy and we'd obviously never want to fight anyone. That said, we're very proud of our country and would never let anyone take it from us without a furious fight with our extremely capable army, extremely capable for a smallish country at least. We've unfortunately had to fight our neighbor in the past, long time ago. We've lived in peace for generations, but now we've again lost all trust in Russia and I would be amazed if we didn't join Nato together with our Swedish brothers and sisters. Madman next door will be disappointed, but he knows who to blame if he has a mirror in his office. Slava Ukraini, I hope this madness stops SOON.
  • Long live Sweden & Finland! 🇸🇪🇫🇮
  • Our Finland 🇫🇮 and Sweden 🇸🇪 brothers are always welcome.
  • I served in 92. I have lived abroad almost my whole life. I'd come home in a blink of an eye! Suomi 🇫🇮 forever

I am from Bangladesh. I have been in Finland and I realized how peace loving, reasonable and friendly people they are. I am willing to do anything possible within my ability to support this wonderful country and it's people if anything goes wrong.
  • As their southern neighbour, Finns are great people. Few nations I would be willing to fight for as a foreigner.
  • When Patrick Star yelled "FINLAND!" he was more than just yelling a country's name....Patrick falling represents Russia and its mistake of invading Finland when Russia a part of the Soviet Union in 1939 Like the Ukrainians, the Finns have every right to decide whether they'd want to be in NATO or not, a superpower shouldn't be making that decision for them

Even if this does or doesn't happen in a few months or years, the fact that are even considering it speaks volume that they won't let Putin's veiled threats determine their future and that everyone deserves the right to be free and secure in their lives and their country.
  • Putin has no one to blame but himself. He greatly underestimated the response to his hostilities.

Finland has a strong army, and the Armed Forces have the highest trust of its civil population among all EU countries. The latter is very important, as shown in Ukraine.

I live and was born in the UK. I work for a Finnish company and it's the best place I have ever worked. Finns are brilliant people. We welcome Finland to NATO. Long live Finland.

Russia wants less nato expansion, so....it starts a war to justify Nato's existence. BRILLIANT MOVE
  • @6862ptc
Russia badly miscalculated the European reaction to the War in Ukraine.
  • Finland is a country of hot saunas, happiness, indestructible Nokia phones, brutal terrain, and hardcore goth music. Safe to say they are more than ready to defend themselves from any attack.
