Are you confused about how to shade your portrait drawings effectively? Watch this video because I have good news for you: there’s a logical way to apply shading to a portrait drawing!
In this video I’ll give you 6 tips for how to shade a portrait drawing so you can improve your drawings regardless if you are shading with charcoal, graphite or pencil.

If you ever wondered how to shade faces using classical drawing principles this video is for you. You’ll learn what goes into drawing realistically from a trained fine art instructor who’s been teaching drawing classes at top art schools for years.

I'll talk about light and shadow, values, midtowns and more.

ASSIGNMENT: Grab a couple of head shot images with a clear light shadow pattern on it (be sure not to use selfies or poorly lit images) and go through the entire portrait process outlined in the PORTRAIT DRAWING Step-by-step Guide. Pay special attention to the shadow pattern and its edges.

Thanks for watching! Which one of these tips was your favorite? I'm curious to find out!
  • Such a fine lesson in art, Carolin !! Thank you so much. You are the best art instructor we find on Youtube. At 9:20 you have a portrait at the upper right corner of your video which I really like. Its a mix between linear and tonal drawing as you say. I love those pencil lines ! It would be heaven if you could make a tutorial on such a technique, involving both linear and tonal shading. In addition to faces, please also show us how to use this technique on clothes like shirts, pants, Victorian ladys skirts. Its quite challenging and I always make a mess of things. I am sure many others will welcome such a tutorial. 😊
