RABID

Published 2023-05-29
A CULTURAL history of Rabies - the disease that erases the line that, supposedly, divides humans from animals. Rabies doesn't use the blood stream to travel, has a variable incubation period, has a cure - thanks to Dr. Louis Pasteur - and a vaccine. The cure is tentative and dangerous so vaccinate yourself before messing with wildlife and bats in the US and Europe. All other places add in dogs and cats as well. Inflammation of the brain kills - after you've become a raving lunatic, salivating at the mouth and trying to kill other people. Rabies isn't pretty.

Growing up in 1970s UK there were regular public information/warning ads on TV and in the news media in general. Don't seem to hear much about rabies any more although pet dogs are still quarantined when entering the country. Thanks for the reminder that this condition still exists, lurking in the undergrowth!

In the US racoons, skunks and bats carry rabies. Elsewhere watch out for dogs. What areas in the US do, is to spread vaccine-baited treats around to immunize the wildlife. The general rule is to stay well away from wildlife who show no fear and those who attack. Make sure you always stay up to date with your pets' shots.
