The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Pier is a 1090' reinforced concrete pier built in 1988 that replaces the original wooden pier built in 1915. It is home to a variety of ocean sensing equipment above and below water that collects various oceanographic data. The research diving facility is located at the foot of the pier. Fresh seawater is pumped from the pier to tanks and facilities of SIO including the Birch Aquarium which is close to where I launched the drone at the top of the cliff. The Scripps Pier is named in honor of Ellen Browning Scripps, the most significant donor and benefactor of the Institution.

The institution operates a fleet of three oceanographic research vessels and the research platform R/P FLIP (FLoating Instrument Platform) (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R/P_FLIP) for oceanographic research.
