0:00 - Intro

There's no "right" way to approaching the pentatonic scale. But there is an easy way where you only have to learn two positions of the scale and still unlock the fretboard of the guitar.

1:26 - Trick #1 - Know The Root Note

The key to fully understanding the guitar is locating the root note of the scale.

3:12 - Trick #2 - Add Musical Context

Play over a backing track and try experimenting with how you play the scale. You'll find melodies from changing the order or phrasing of the scale.

5:12 - Trick #3 - Master One Part Of The Neck

Start with mastering ONE part of the neck to keep it simple and accessible. So when you hear a lick, you know where to find it.

7:46 - 4th Position Pentatonic Scale

You can also call it the A string root Pentatonic shape. This is when you can start to add new colors and notes.

9:46 - Transposing The Pentatonic Scale

When you know the regions of the neck really well, you'll be able to find and move up the octave and play the same shape. Now the whole fretboard is covered!

10:53 - Next Steps

Remember root notes and learn your intervals!

12:30 - Performance

Now we'll put everything we learned into one guitar jam.

I'm a 74 year old beginner. Only learned about the pentatonic scales a couple months ago and have been practicing what you showed us in the beginning. I call myself old slow fingers. But one of the very first things I learned is that you can make real melodic sounds just by skipping around any of the scales. It impressed me so much that I believe what teachers say about scales being boring is b.s. I love doing scales, all of them. I began learning because I'm afraid that one of these days dementia may set in and after reading a piece on researchers who visited a nunnery found that some of the nuns who had alzheimers and dementia , showed no signs of it. They discovered that the nuns played scrabble, chess, and did crossword puzzles. I'll be practicing until my wife takes my guitar away from me.

I respect that you didn't edit your mistake. It makes you much more relatable and also shows no matter how good we get at playing we all make mistakes... and it's ok. Great lesson, thank you.

Wow! You explained to me in 14 minutes what no one has been able to concisely teach me in my 18 months of playing. You teach good...real good!

I spend a lot of time floating about the minor pentatonic and blues scales and often get stuck playing the same thing over and over. This lesson has freed me and allowed me to use many more notes as well as adding a more fluid feel to my playing. Thank you so much! Just subscribed and looking forward to more, you are a truly fantastic teacher.
  • You're the nicest guitar instructor on YouTube. You make learning guitar so relaxing. I'm a beginner and I'm practicing your pentatonic techniques. It has made learning so much more fun for me. Now when I practice it actually is starting to sound like music which is our ultimate goal like you've said. Thank you for keeping it simple and easy....

Honestly you are an excellent teacher. I've been playing a little over 10 years. I learned more from you, and your videos than from anyone else in my life. You speak so eloquently, and have a way of dumbing music theory down to where after over a decade I'm FINALLY getting it. Thank you soo much! You teach and play like an Angel!
  • @RaymondSardella
Thanks for helping simplify and bringing down to one scale. I picked up the guitar at 53 and to be honest you have helped me push through problems better than any other person.
  • I started playing guitar at 16 and fast forward 30 yrs later, i’m still stuck with with very very little music theory and have tried my best to learn from all sources available. You are an excellent teacher coz you teach in such an easy to understand manner that’s non intimidating and it would encourage any amateur who’s trying to better themselves. Thank you, YOU DEFINITELY ROCK!!
  • Bravo! Where were you and YouTube 40 years ago when I started playing the guitar? It was such an overwhelming task to try to learn the 5 different pentatonic shapes and then just remember where the root was when you played in a different key! Needless to say I never mastered it. This is genius to only learn 2 shapes. Thank you and keep the lessons coming, please!

This was so helpful. I’ve been having a hard time trying to conceptualize playing guitar and this helped a lot.👍
  • It’s so nice to hear a female teaching guitar. Your teaching style is pleasant and informative. I’m a teacher too and learning guitar at age 69! 5 years now.

She knows what beginner is struggling with. She teaches “The root of Practice”

Thank you for this inspirational way to think about playing lead guitar! I am a 65 years young female that has been playing since I was 10.... transitioning from acoustic guitar to Tele. Its a difficult switch but your method of presenting these scales makes it so much more understandable and accessible! You are an amazing young lady and I wish you many wonderful years of music making!!! Many thanks!
  • @tiernanfoss
So many teachers create information overload in their students. I think this is why many give up. You have a rare gift for keeping things simple and accessable. I'm always inspired to practice after watching your videos!
  • @sconzman1
I have been playing for a long time and have had several bands. I do have to say that the teachers back then Never taught like you do. I thinks teachers back then made students give up the guitar. At 14 I was listening to Jimi Hendrix (My Favorite) and actually learned to play guitar from listening to him and then figuring the song out. I still have my 1968 Strat and several other guitars. Again, don't stop what you are doing. You are a Great teacher, writer and a Great Performer! love your songs! You Are Truly Talented and Gifted!... Allan PS: give a holler if you are ever gigging in the New Jersey area!
  • I've watched so many people try to explain pentatonic fretboard theory and nothing has helped much. At first I thought your idea was not going to work, but after watching the whole thing, I think this is going to be life changing! Thanks so much for the great lesson
  • @mwinyimwenyi
You're a better teacher than a lotta older seasoned musicians trynna teach. Good job.
