  • Nice to see covered as my father fought in the Desert Rats after fighting in Greece and Crete. I have a picture of him at the start when he was 23 looking well and bright eyed and one about 18months later where he looks 10 years older, gaunt and exhausted. He then fought in the Italian campaign and up to Berlin where he served as part of the occupation army. As they say he did his bit.

My Grandfather was a one of the Australian Rats of Tobruk. Though he did return from the war, he returned in poor health and died while my mum was still a teenager, so I never got to meet him.
  • The poem "The sad story of George Nathaniel Glover" was an intriguing piece of whimsy included to add humor to the story of a life and death struggle. I enjoyed it.
  • @Zebred2001
That pipeline timing part had to be one of the most brilliant parts of the whole deception!

“Be there in a minute Monty. “ I said to my dad a WWII veteran (pacific theater) when I was seven. (Probably being called to dinner or do my chores) I of course first heard the phrase from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. I had no idea why my dad looked so confused
  • Good morning. A favorite channel of mine, J D - A Lawyer Explains, recommended this channel to his subscribers today. I'm here and very grateful for the recommendation
  • Good Friday morning History Guy and everyone watching. Have a great weekend. I deployed to the Mediterranean twice in 1995 and 2002 on USS Whidbey Island LSD 41 and USS Wasp LHD 1 respectively. Visited Souda Bay Crete twice. Sailed through the Suez Canal twice in 2002

back in the early 2000's I bought a postcard of the USS Wyoming postmarked 1942 from an antique shop. It looked cool so I didn't mind spending a buck for it. A few weeks ago I happened upon it & decided to read the back of the card. It was from a LT Commander McClelland Barclay & he was writing to a lady friend in NYC telling her he was shipping out. I googled him and found out he was a well known commercial illustrator who designed many of the WWII recruiting posters and, as a civilian, was awarded the rank of LT Commander for designing camouflage for Navy ships. There is much more to this interesting "hero" that deserves a History Guy episode ;o)

Those old Psyops are really interesting considering how complicated they have become in our modern world where digitial warfare takes a frontseat.
  • @HM2SGT
Deception is one of the greatest force multipliers. It's not so much about hiding things being sneaky, but helping the enemy see what they want\expect to see & misinterpret what they're seeing.

"Hell, I know I'm a prima donna - I admit it! What I can't stand about Monty is he won't admit it." - General George S. Patton
  • THG always enjoys bringing to light lesser known stories. I'd really enjoy watching an episode on 'Operation Dragoon"!
  • David Fisher's The War Magician is worth a read. An actual magician Jasper Maskelyne was part of the camouflage unit and successfully "hid" the Suez Canal
  • Weird seeing my name in the title of a history video and having had never heard of the subject. Glad to learn this forgotten history
  • @Iowa599
Clever camo to make whatever appear to have been already destroyed, instead of dissappear!
  • @kinbigbird
"Rommel, you magnificent bastard, I read your book." - General Patton
  • Good morning from Connecticut, fellow loyal classmates! Everyday is a good day to learn!
