LYRICS! "hero" in ()
Chords repeat Dm, G7, Cmaj7, Am
(What are you doing, dear? Aren’t you tired?)
What are you doing here? I don’t think that you were invited.
Here you go again, pretending like you love me.
When just under the surface, you’re convinced that you’re above me.
(Dig deep, into the past, I’ve never been one for doing things half-assed
If I’m here to save you, I’ll be here forever.
Take my hand, I can be your knight in shining armor!)

You think you’re a hero!
And they’ll tell you you are
So stoic and handsome!
And you’ve come so far!

(You think you’re a villain
But I know you’re not!
Under all that angst and anger
Is a beating human heart)/Is a dying broken heart

Hey, what about the lonely little girls/(I’m sorry!)
What about her monsters who prevailed?/(I’m sorry!)
You never came to save my world!
What about me?/(What about us?)

(I recognize that you’re upset I know they did you wrong)/Oh you know nothing of me
(But trust me please believe me this won’t stop the hurt for long
We don’t need to end like this, look me in the eyes)/Here comes the hero complex
(You call yourself a villain but we know it’s a disguise)/I know I’m the villain, but you’re the one who lies

SO! You’re back at it again?
Twisting and manipulating every word I’ve said?
(C’mon you know that’s not true
I’m just trying to help you, let me help you!)

You are NOT MY HERO
YOU DON’T KNOW HOW IT FELT
WHAT ELSE COULD YOU DO WITH THE CARDS THAT I’VE BEEN DEALT
(You are not the villain,
You once held my hand)
Stand up. Get out. Sometimes things don’t go as planned.

"Hero" and "Villain" : About to confront eachother "Villain" : Hold on, let me get my ukulele.
  • Plot twist: they were both hero’s who did something terrible. One got over it, the other was broken.

I half teared up at the villian part "What about the lonely little girls what about her monsters who prevailed. You never came to save my world, what about me?" It seriously hit a nerve.

“Nobody is the villain in their own story. We're all the heroes of our own stories. ” — George R.R Martin
  • Personal Opinion here: The one on the right is the antagonist and the one on the left is the protagonist, but the one on the right is the hero, and the one on the left is the villain. The protagonist isn’t always a good person, it’s just the main character that people sympathize/relate with.

I feel like “stoic and handsome” might be a reference to not having been emotionally available in the past?

“You are not the villain” Captions: you are not feminine

"They're not really a villain just the antagonist. I'd say the protagonist is the real villain, after all she's done" -Yukey

you know i noticed the "hero" never actually...calls themselves that? they say they'll be the "villains" knight in shinning armor early on, but the only person who calls them a hero is the "villain" (they never call them a villain, either, just say "i know you think youre a villain") which might say something about how differently these two are viewing the situation.
  • Hero’s point of view: ‘Hero’ and ‘Damsel in distress’ Villain’s point of view: ‘Two people who have done equally bad things’
  • "I recognize that you’re upset." Tbh I feel like this is really powerful. Usually, someone would say, "I understand that you’re upset" but the hero didn't say that. While "understand" and "recognize" are synonyms, they can have different interpretations. I "understand" is like "Hey, I have gone through the same thing you're going through. I know what you're feeling. And that's why I'm here to help you." I "recognize" is like "Hey, I may have not gone through the same thing as you but I see that you're in a lot of pain. That's why I'm here to help you." IDK I just thought it was a nice detail in the song

I love how either one could be the hero or the villain. This just proves that the only difference between a hero and a villain is the one who tells the story.
