In this video, I give a demonstration of how to QUICKLY make a garden bed for planting vegetables to grow at home. Plus, I explain the process I go through to see what the garden bed needs to grow a successful crop in the new growing season.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

I’ve been watching your videos for a few months now. I’ve had real poor mental health, and wanted to let you know how much your passion and knowledge has helped me. I’m back out in the garden, and harvested a heap of spinach, snowpeas and broccoli today. Thanks for putting your videos out. They mean a lot.x

Now would probably be a great time for you to begin a series that walks people through starting a garden from scratch and how to pick/create the correct soils for certain plants.
  • I was clinging to you for life and sanity. I'm just going to go garden crazy now. If you're going to lose your mind, do it in a garden.

"Manure in the hands, nothing like it." This guy has his priorities straight.

Great timing. Cup of coffee and some "self sufficient me" before hitting the garden and taking care of my bees. ♥️

Glad I'm not the only one that gets excited over worms. I talk to mine but don't tell anybody. They're like a million rototillers, no gas required.
  • I think what you call "hessian" in Australia is the same thing we call "burlap" in the USA. Just in case anyone had a question about that.

I'm just a guy in an apartment experimenting with growing vegetables and herbs on the balcony and on the windowsill. Even for such low scale projects you are an inspiration. Very informative and massively entertaining to boot!

I've had to recycle and add stuff to my kiddy pools. I weeded and added chicken poop. Still had plenty of earth worms. It wasn't an easy job for this old lady but the plants are happy. They have told me so. They are smiling.

The rotation plan for raised beds is legume, root, leaf, fruit. The thinking behind this is that any harmful nematodes specific to a crop or common to a kind of crop will decline with such a rotation scheme.

I love your channel Mark, I’d love to be your neighbor! Thank you for your service to the free world! Stay safe and stay awesome 😎
  • Mark the jolly giant. I love it when he says "let's get into it" and gives a big thumbs up

Gardening without gloves might just save your life, especially when working with manure. You're way less likely to touch your face 😂😂 Thanks for the great content during lockdown. Love from South Africa 🌍
  • As a busy exhausted nurse, a mum of four and renter, your garden IS my garden... the garden I need right now in april 2020. Thank you.

I'm just starting out for the first time. I started tomatoes, arugula and a large assortment of herbs, all to be grown in containers on my deck. This channel has been extremely helpful. Thank you!
  • When you said soil with an extra gift in it you sounded exactly like my grandfather in Alaska... I also use to be a manure spreader and would have to clean the trucks I'd get covered head to toe. Best job ever I really loved it!!!!
  • recently realized that i needed to learn gardening and how to grow my own food and your channel has been amazing to watch, very entertaining and informative
