On this 248th anniversary of Independence Day in my country, I was thinking of history and things that took place long ago. So…I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite classics. 😊

Fantastic list! I've read and loved all of these except for Madame Bovary and The War of the Worlds which are on my TBR. Excited to get to them.
  • What a great list! I also love a lot of these books. My list of top ten classics would have some of yours on it too, but mine would also probably include at least one Dickens novel and Emily and Charlotte Bronte.

I'd have to add Charles Dicken's works---especially Nicholas Nicleby and Our Mutual Friend

Some 20 years ago a Lit Prof made a list of the greatest novels of all time based on literary stature/ influence. Thought you’d like to see the top 10. 1 Don Quixote 2 War and Peace 3 Ulysses 4 In Search of Lost Time 5 The Brothers Karamazov 6 Moby-Dick 7 Madame Bovary 8 Middlemarch 9 The Magic Mountain 10 The Tale of Genji

You have such fine taste that I trust you on a book I've never considered reading, "The War of the Worlds." Thanks for that. (It's easy to trust somebody who has two Austens in her list of favorites—but I too wonder why Dickens didn't make the cut.... He seems like a natural for you.)

A Marriage Under the Terror by Patricia Wentworth is also good

I’ve only read Northanger Abbey out of these. I really enjoyed it. There’s quite a few on this list I want to read. Some I’ve already wanted to and some I’ve just added. Anna Karenina being at the top and for the longest I’ve wanted to read it. Hopefully before the end of the year. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Nicky, it has been interesting listening to you. When l was younger l didn't like classics books but l red Gone with the wind and its sequel Rossella by A. Ripley, Le rouge e le noir by Stendhal, Il nome della rosa by U. Eco. As gotten older, l' ve appreciated these kind of books more, l' ve red Canne al vento by G. Deledda and Sense and sensibility and reading Little women and Emma are definitely on my bucket list.

I think North and South is better than Anna Karenina. People want to have me locked up :) Margaret is a brilliant character. Love that novel. I think you would enjoy Jubilee by Margaret Walker if you liked Gone with the Wind.

Given your obsession with "women in peril", I'm surprised that The Woman in White is not on your list. It really is a terrific nail-biter.
