MY STORY //

Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel has documented my journey adjusting to life with a visible disability as an amputee, and continues to be a haven to discuss physical and mental health!

MY PROSTHETIC LEG:
I use the Ossur ProFlex XC Torsion foot/ankle with a direct socket with passive vaccum suction.

Hi Jo! My dad has been the product designer for Xtremity since they first got started with the ideas phase years ago, and itā€™s truly so inspiring and beautiful to see this project finally reach people after years of tireless work from my dad and everyone at Xtremity. I just want you to know that this video and the convention you were a part of made my dad practically jump for joy with excitement that his work has impacted people in this way :) thank you for your kind words and inspiration!

This makes absolute sense. I've worn shoes which were badly worn out, and made walking exceptionally painful, but in my naivety I honestly thought it was due to being out of shape as I just started a highly physical job. But after I bought new shoes, the pain almost immediately went away, and I was pain free ever since. Although I would imagine that a stub would be a very different experience, if your socket isn't perfectly fitted, it would probably become more and more and more sore no matter what you do to deal with it. I remember spending the entire weekend out of my shoes and my feet would still hurt. No wonder why you've been struggling so much lately. Also, the fact that it's adjustable is a game changer!
  • @hot_wheelz
So very happy that your new socket is giving you at least a little relief from the pain and lack of freedom that you've been dealing with more recently. More broadly, these new rapid manufacturing processes will truly be a game changer for so many people who need the use of prosthetics, orthotics and other similar aids to daily life.

While at work, I saw a woman with a prosthetic thumb and index finger. I politely asked about it, and we talked about it for a bit. She was so happy to have a prosthetic that was articulated, even if she had to move it with her other hand. Its amazing how much a small change can make drastic changes in a person comfort and mobility. I hope the new socket goes well and helps decrease the amount of pain you've been having recently.
  • This January will mark 50 years of being an amputee for me. The amount of change I have seen in prosthetics technology over that time is just mind blowing to ne. And it seems like most of that change has taken place over just the last 15 years or so.
  • My prosthetist actually has a very similar process that he utilizes for patients who need it (like myself with lots of pain issues), which is a same-day creation of the socket, in about an hour or so! It has been incredibly helpful and honestly life-changing... That alongside a vacuum seal system, which I was terrified to explore because major change like that with your only means of mobility... it's really scary. But making that shift to vacuum vs suction, alongside a same-day socket, has made the biggest difference in the world. I previously couldn't use my prosthetic anymore because it was just too painful and made my leg really angry, but I can now wear my leg for most of the day without issue, and it's continuing to improve even more! So glad that you are having such a great experience and seem so happy šŸ’œšŸ’œ

I am fully limbed, but I understand this IS a game changer. 1) Speed. 2) Adjustability. 3) Comfort. The one thing Jo didn't touch on was cost (Americans are weird about costs) and insurance coverage, that would be interesting to hear more about, not to pry but to take into account. For no matter how amazing the tech is, if it is out of reach for most, then it will be just one more thing that is gated by wealth.
  • @bestnarryever
OH my god, I just realized this could help me too! I have an invisible disability (HSD) and I have to wear an extra support (like an insole) in my shoes that need to be adjusted every 2 months or so in order to keep my feet stable and stronger than they are (I fall a lot when I don't have these on because my foot just doesn't stay flat lol) so IMAGINE if they were made out of the same technology, where you just adjust the changes with a heat gun? Thanks for sharing Jo, I'm so glad this is evolving and becoming easier to adapt!
  • @Willow76ny
Congrats on your new socket! Major kudos to Xtremities for creating a leg thatā€™s comfortable to wear for long periods of time. And like everyone else is saying,itā€™s so good to see you smiling again!šŸ˜Šā¤
  • @BudTheDrummer
Jordan, who would've thought you'd be a Foot Model? LMAO! In all seriousness, you've turned an injury into a complete Educational Experience. An acquaintance lost both arms to the shoulders in a powerline accident and has two prosthetic arms with claw hands. He's an accomplished Artist Landscaper. Science is so amazing! Were it not for your videos I would never have known all I've learned from you. Please keep making videos. We love you!
  • Been a physical therapist for 30 years and am always looking for for great new ideas! Thanks for the video!!
  • @pianotm
You know what absolutely amazes me? These prosthetics that they're making that actually have a sense of touch. Like, the people wearing the prosthetics can actually feel it when they touch something.
  • @Debberdoon
Science and innovation are amazing! Iā€™m so glad this new socket is making your life more comfortable and will make it easier to make adjustments going forward.
  • Hey there Jo, I was that amputee prosthetist who recognized you and said hello while you were at the xtremity booth! I donā€™t know if you remember me but it was great meeting you up there and Iā€™m glad to hear that their soccer is doing so well for you!
  • @PolkaSunia
I'm so happy for you to have a new leg where you can walk with less pain and you can dance as well!! That's awesome!!
  • @analuisa1214
That's so cool!! I really hope that in the near future this becomes an widely available option, that's an incredible work they're doing there!!
  • @lisarice4402
Oh wow!! I am sending this info to my daughter so she can research it where she lives in Nebraska - thank you so much for sharing your journey!! You are a gem!! Many blessings and way less pain for you!!
  • That is just amazing. To have a socket done in about 2 to 3 hours and have it feel good to. But then to be able to make adjustments like with a heat gun a stuff, wow. I wish they had a place out here in North Carolina, but I don't think so. I just picked up my new leg after just six months of the first one and I love it so far. I just love watching you and your adventures.
  • Sooo cool! A graphene socket?! Awesome. I wish any leg amputee would simply be able to get one of these. Still great to have your accessible flat for anything that might happen in the future. :)
  • Iā€™m so glad that you found something that actually works out really well for you. I know it can be tough. Thanks for bringing so much hope into my life. Keep being awesome
