  • Nobody in the whole World can put together sadness and happyness in the same song.... only The Beatles !!!
  • @james_119
“I wasn’t expecting to get so emotional.” I think quite a lot of people have said just this over the last few days. What a song.
  • Yes, it is 43 years since John was taken from us, and 22 years since George passed away. This video is a tribute to them, in particular, and the surviving Beatles are in the video to show that they carry on the torch of the Beatles' career and legend. We are so lucky to have this wonderful song. The video is such a nice reminder of how great they were and are and how much we miss John and George! I think I'm going to queue up "A Hard Day's Night" right now and watch it, cranked to the 10s!!
  • Don’t know what John was thinking when he wrote it but despite the simple lyrics and melody this song seems to represent so much more. The melancholy vibe and the juxtaposition of the young and old Beatles feels like an ode to passing youth not only for the Beatles but for all of us. Yes Now And Then we miss you John, Paul , George and Ringo but we also miss our young selves and the lives we used to have. I can’t help but shed a few tears when I listen to this.
  • This song is special in so many ways. First of all, both Ringo and Paul are over 80 years of age, and it was a very beautiful tribute to both John and the two Georges (Harrison and Martin). It's almost as if they are saying their farewells, not only as beatles, but in general. It's also quite cool that Giles Martin put together the symphonic elements as his father is dead.

One of Paul's songs is called Dear Friend, and Paul later said that it was about his feelings for John. The last lyric of that song is "Is it true?" This song begins with "I know it's true.." 😭I think Paul, who missed John, had a strong desire to finish this song. Thank you for your emotional response and video.
  • Only Lennon could write a song like this IMO. It is bittersweet, melancholy and very beautiful. His last words to Paul were "Think of me every now & then, my old friend". This song captures it.

I'm now 44 and grew up listening to the Beatles thanks to my late mum. this song hit me so hard. so many happy memorys. never be ashamed of the tears when they fall
  • @p344y
You realize George has passed also, its not just an homage to John. Either way it’s a beautifully emotional and eerie tribute and the perfect finale for the most legendary rock band in history ❤

Man I watched this yesterday morning and John made a demo of this song on a cassette in the mid 70's and Yoko found it and on the tape it says' give to Paul and it took this many years for us to hear John's Beautiful voice and how he was such a great song writer! I had many tears I couldn't hold back!

This is the last Beatles song since George recorded the guitar parts before his passing. When I was 14 I remember going into a record store and on the back wall was a rack with the top 40, 45 rpm records in order. The top of the rack was the top ten and every single one was a Beatles song. Love hearing this and seeing them together as young and old men.

I'm so happy this generation can experience a new Beatles song. Your reaction was wonderful 💖
  • The Nostalgic Vibe is Awesome! Good thing watery eyes doesn't affect hearing the Greatest band of all time! So great to hear the Beatles singing again... With happy tears and a big smile!😁. Thanks Aileen Luv ya! ❤️💛
  • @Richarddraper
I like it a lot more than I expected to. The video especially is a tear jerker. Even in their bright and happy Beatlemania days, there was always that hint of melancholy in their music. This is the last song in the canon 60 odd years later.
  • @DanielDeRudder
Hi Aileen, I'm 65 and a Beatles fan from my early teens. Never in my wildest dreams I could imagine witnessing the release of a (final) Beatles song but we just did ! You can get emotional for less. We live in special times...

Yoko had given them a couple of demo tapes of John singing at home. They managed to use two of the three songs in 94, Free as a Bird and Real Love. They just couldn't get John's voice pulled out from under the piano accompaniment on Now and Then. They tried and did record some for it, like Georges rhythm guitar and vocals, etc. It's great that they could finally finish it. John's last words to Paul were, "Think about me now and then, old friend." Carl Perkins, when recording with Paul years after John's death, wrote him a song as a thank you for his hospitality, titled "My Old Friend". It brought Paul to tears and Carl thought he had done something wrong. Linda took him aside and thanked him for the song and explained John's last words to Paul. She said until that moment, Paul hadn't been able to really grieve.

I listened when it first aired on the radio, I broke down in tears. All I can remember was receiving my first Beatles CD when I was 8 years old. It was The Beatles anthology vol 1. And then I started buying Beatles CDs, ok my parents did, but it drove me down a path of loving the Beatles. I really wish they would have also released carnival of lights and the 25 minute version of Helter skelter. But. It definitely was so many emotions running through me when I first heard it. And the fifth. And the 10th. And I'm pretty sure the 1000th time I still will be amazed
  • @brianr3763
The understated moment to me is George and Paul disassembling the drums while John wheels out an amp. It's as if they're telling us the show's over. What a powerful way to say goodbye.
  • I agree with you 100%. I'm 69 year old and the video truly brings back old memories and touches us emotionally. I grew up listening to The Beatles and have always been amazed as to how much their music seems to intertwine with my life. For those of us that grew up in the 1960's, their music is like a backdrop to our lives.
