Dig into the science of soy, and discover what makes soybeans such versatile plants and whether it’s healthy for you and the planet.

--

Soybeans have been cultivated in Asia for thousands of years, and have since spread across the globe. Today, soy is in so many foods that most people consume it every day without even knowing it. So, what makes soybeans so versatile? And is our global obsession healthy or harmful? Francesca Bot explores why this single plant is used in everything from mayonnaise to biodegradable plastic.

congrats TED-Ed for the 10 year anniversary! you don't know how much I've learned from your videos

To be fair, clearing forests for agriculture is a problem for numerous crops, not just soy. And it does have the advantage of fixing at least part of its own nitrogen.

As someone who suddenly developed an intolerance to soy (among other types of food) I now know first hand that it's a nightmare to find processed foods that don't contain soy.
  • Important to state that the majority of the soy production in the amazon is used for feed for industrial factory farming

As someone with a soy allergy the downside of this is that the food that doesn't have soy tends to be more expensive and more difficult to come by.

As someone with a significant other being allergic to soy, I barely eat it for a long time now. I was also surprised how soy is in everything.
  • 🙌🏻 Great video! I think it would have been nice to mention that MOST of the soy produced is used for animal feed, which means, the real ecological/sustainability problem of soy comes from animal agriculture, not tofu 😂
  • Congrats on your 10th Anniversary, Ted-Ed! I've been learning from you for the past 5 years and I hope you educate a lot more others!

There's one concern with soy that I'm surprised you didn't mention. Soy beans have a high amount of estrogenic compounds that can cause or significantly worsen hormone imbalances. Historically, Asian peoples for whom soy is a traditional part of their diet would ferment the soy products for years to break down the more harmful components, but today's modern industry artificially ferments soy by basically just adding a bunch of chemicals and calling it good. That process doesn't break down the estrogenic compounds quite the same way. I have PCOS, an endocrine disorder that causes hormone imbalance. I found out through accidently double-blind studying myself that I cannot eat chemically fermented soy products - vegan mayo, fake meats, grocery store tofu, etc. - but am fine with properly fermented soy sauce and other soy products.
