Storm of 61

Published 2019-11-08
Here is the song that I wrote about the 1961 fishing tragedy that happened in Lockeport NS, when 17 of our men were lost at sea leaving 65 children fatherless, my three brothers being some of them. It was a huge part in our little towns history, so I wanted to document it in this way so that is is never forgotten and can be passed down to generations to come.

I made this video with some old 1950 film footage from our town ( which I think you will enjoy)along with some of our recording studio footage. I want to thank the talented Doris Mason for helping me put music to the lyrics, and all the people who came in and played on the song(they are in the credits at the end of the video, please check it out)a big thank-you to you all!

I had an amazing time recording it with everyone! I love how it turned out and I hope you enjoy it.

  • This song honours these brave men and their families. It means a lot to me and my family. My father was the United Church minister in Lockeport, Alex Farquhar, when I was born and we had two of the captains in our church. I'm told that as a baby I was taken out for a short ride on one of the boats that went down in 1961. We had moved to Halifax by then. I vividly remember as a 9 year old being taken to the memorial service in Lockeport that Spring. I could tell even at that young age how profoundly shaken that community was. Thank you
