The Development of Ocarina of Time

Published 2023-11-21
Season 5 Episode 1

This season of Legendary Adventures Podcast is all about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. Each episode will explore a dungeon, and my gameplay leading up to that dungeon. Then we'll take a look at the game world, and the legacy of Ocarina of Time. In this first episode of Season Five, we're looking at the development of the game. The developers say it was challenging, but it resulted in one of the most influential video games ever made.

Legendary Adventures is a Legend of Zelda playthrough podcast. I’m exploring the evolution of the Zelda game series by playing through each game in release order, excluding spin-offs and multi-player focused releases. Each season focuses on one game in the series. Legendary Adventures was conceived and launched as an audio podcast. I am making video versions of episodes as I am able. You can listen to all my episodes by subscribing to the podcast.

Ocarina of Time's title screen still gets me nostalgic to this day. Such a beautiful game.

I still remember Christmas of ‘98. I found Golden copy of OoT hiding in my parents closet 10 days before Christmas. It was the start of winter break and I could not wait to play so I opened it and played it in secret and put it back in its packaging before my parents could find out. It was really hard acting surprised that Christmas morning. I love you mom and dad.

The opening theme kind of sounded like music that you think about as you grow over the years, which is exactly what this game is about. It also is ironic how this game accurately depicts real life where things are so nice and easy when we are kids, but become very dark and gloomy when we're adults.

It's incredible how I'm still learning new things about this game. And the music...every time I hear it it's like I'm transported back to 1998 again.

Another reason the game is 3rd person is because of the importance of seeing child Link vs adult Link. Seeing your character grow up in front of you is an integral part of understanding the character
  • I have shipped 15 games as a professional, and 1 indie game, and Ocarina of Time still impresses me with just how much of the 'basics' they got right in modern game design. They really nailed almost all of the things we take for granted all at once back on a calculator of a game console. I love this this game.
  • I was 7 when this game was released and I looooved watching my older brother play for hours (I was too scared to play myself). Now I'm 32 and playing TOTK. This game series is every thing to me.

That title screen and music takes me right back to my teens, picking the game up just before Christmas and playing this with the family around the house during the holidays. Perfect times.

For the z-targeting in combat, one neat trick is if you're fighting multiple opponents and not locking on, they will all attack, but if you z-target one, the others will back off so you can fight one-on-one

The thing a lot of recent players probably don’t realize is, while the game itself is amazing…the GLITCHES in this game were also some of the most wild ever seen. The whole bit in the end with the master sword glitch at the Gannon fight turned it almost into an extra “level” to enjoy. Nothing to accomplish…but more of like a playground where anything could happen. Hook shot flying. Sky swimming. Driving epona remotely. There was so much. I’m pretty sure it became the main reason we got so many playground rumors around that time. Edit: one thing I wanna point out is that these glitches were not obvious. It wasn’t like Skyrim where the game just shit it own pants every now and then…OoT was completely solid to play. You only got the glitches by following a set procedure at the very end of the game…but once you did…it’s like it cracked the whole game wide open.
  • The title screen music in Ocarina of Time is incredibly beautiful :face-red-heart-shape:

Imagine having no game dev experience, and being casually invited to join the development team for the biggest video game in history

I found a working CRT Tv 📺 at thrift store and dug out my older brother’s Nintendo 64 with Ocarina of time and Majora’s Mask. He passed away in 2016 so it’s tough for me to play Ocarina without getting sad. Playing the same 2 games he competed when he was 10-12 years old. RIP Phil ❤ 1989–2016 When I finish Ocarina I’m going to try Majora’s Mask I’ll probably need to use a YouTube more than a few times while playing Majoras mask. Ngl I had to use YouTube to beat the water temple in Ocarina 3 months ago. They made Ocarina and MM tough and difficult so that you would feel proud and accomplished if you completed the game all the way through.

This was such a good game. My text ringtone is the Navi “hey, listen!” 😆

I recently played this game in 2022 on an original n64 and I loved it. It got me into Zelda and is now one of my favorite games of all time.
  • Really wish they’d had time to complete the sixth adult temple “Light Temple” where you’d get the hookshot. Seems pretty clear this was intended
