Thousands of people in Majorca are protesting against the surge in tourism that is being blamed for plummeting living standards among the local population.

Activists say spiralling housing costs on the Spanish Island are being driven by a huge number of properties being bought by foreigners.

This year, the anger among many locals is reaching a new level - notably demonstrated in Barcelona recently when visitors were drenched with water pistols.

I wouldn't blame the local Spainish people being angry. Profitering from house pricing and rentals are insane.

Why not increase taxation on owners and tourists and spread the wealth around. It's not the tourists, it's the government.
  • @portalkey5283
Meanwhile the spanish govt: *keeps quiet *lets its people blame tourists

This happens in all the big touristy places: Venice; Barcelona; Paris; Edinburgh etc. Not just a Majorcan thing. It’s just about creating housing laws in each place where the permanent local is put before the passing tourist.

It's happening everywhere, not just Spain. In the UK, homes are being bought up by Russian, Saudi, and Chinese investors which pushes up prices even more for the local population. This is a global problem that needs solving.

Outlaw Airbnb….simple as that. Pressure local authorities to get on with it.

we welcome tourists, we are one of the friendliest countries, at least in Europe. But we want tourism to be regulated and airbnb to be limited so that we can afford housing in OUR COUNTRY. what is it so difficult to understand?

The worst thing to happen in recent times is the growth of Airbnbs. They have created a real housing crisis as houses and apartments are being taken out of the residential market and transferred into Airbnbs. This needs to be stopped now, so that people’s housing needs are prioritised over the greed of private property owners. It is also not fair on the residents living near or next door to the Airbnbs as they have to put up with the parties that go on, with no consideration to their privacy. Governments around the world are just shutting their eyes to this crisis.

Perhaps the Spanish people should ask their government why tourism money is being directed to "some economic powers" rather than benefiting the citizens as a whole.

“This is what these places are for, innit?” Not if you live there, mate.

First, the Span. Gov. has to implemennt laws protecting their ppl. and living standards. Second, ban cheap hotels and appartments etc. for tourists. Selling houses for foreigners should be taxed heavily and make difficult to purchase. Third, ban booze travels and cheap travels.
  • @EdwardOberon
It's just the Airbnb's... it's a massive problem here as well....
  • @anatole2478
If only they felt the same about legal and illegal immigrants
  • No tourism is also not an option. Address your issues to your government and don’t blame the tourists
  • When you don’t have a job you won’t be able to afford anything.

Love they asked two chavs, like it's a black and white question. BBC: "Escaping the weather bk home" yes... yeah 30 in the UK is truly a winter.
  • @ConradNeill
Why not build affordable housing that can't be bought by foreign investors, or used for short-stay rentals? Before they get rid of tourists, they should look at some of the UK seaside towns that lost their tourist trade thanks to the availability of cheap Spanish holidays.
  • Do you think the landlords will lower the real state prices to accommodate the locals? I doubt.
