In Frozen 2, a key plot point is the idea presented by everyone's favorite snowman, Olaf. He tells us that water has memory. That is a concept that has been around for a while and, while I am not one to fault the water based science of a creature that is literally made from frozen WATER, that is exactly what I am here to do. You see, that was something I needed to learn more about and, OH BOY, did I find out how bad Olaf's science really is! Don't let a snowman teach you science Theorists!

  • Does 'Smartwater' have better memory than basic water and if you shout insults at it, will it have a witty comeback? Does it silently judge you for your social indiscretions? Is 'smartwater' a smug jerk? Is it "Smugwater?"
  • @MrRad
I got really scared when Matpat started quoting the original water memory study, that he was gonna claim that water does indeed have memory. I was very relieved when he kept going😂

I had a friend with legitimate medical concerns for her children. She was convinced homeopathy (the idea that one particle of substance per biillion particles of water is effective medicine because water has a "memory") was how to treat her kids. Her kids didn't die and that convinced her that this philosophy is good medicine, so now she travels the US selling essentially water to people with legitimate health concerns. If they die, they did something wrong. If they live she is their savior. What we are talking about here is homeopathy and it is dangerous because people forego legitimate healthcare for distilled water.
  • Me: Drinks water Water: Starts to cry from pain Also me: Why is there more water in my drink?
  • MatPat: talks about the most iconic part of the movie Doesn't mention the scene when Olaf acted out the first movie
  • Well, to contrast what you mention at the end, teaching children that water has memory could lead them to be more susceptible to alternative therapies, such as homeopathy; an alternative therapy specifically being based around this idea of dilution and water memory. Furthering what you mentioned, it teaches children to ignore the skeptics and just believe, a thought process quite at odds with critical thinking.
  • @TheMadPlayer.
It definitely gets downplayed but hats off to your editor. It's amazing how Every second of your videos are so full of energy and life and it's only accentuated by the editing

"People thinking water has memory isn't going to hurt them"
  • @margarita4117
My therapist: Axe-murdering Olaf isn’t real, he can’t hurt you Axe-murdering Olaf:

12:40 wait a minute, frantic clicking on youtube “Dory is faking her memory loss” -MatPat We’ve entered a paradox
  • When MatPat said ‚ Here comes Olaf‘ I looked behind my back. TWICE.
  • Ok so here's the REAL theory, If Olaf is made of snow, stones, twigs, and a carrot, WHERE. DID. THE. EYEBALLS. COME. FROM?
  • “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but I don’t have any bones lol” -Olaf

I'm pretty sure when when Olaf says "it's disputed by many but it's true" he's talking about the people in the Frozen universe. He's trying to establish a sort of believable explanation for Elsa's power, but there will always be people who doubt things. Before Elsa's escape from the castle, I highly doubt anyone even knew magical powers like that are possible. Plus, even to this day we have science deniers, so it's highly likely that the in movie universe could have deniers, or just people who never seen any proof and doubting it
  • @smookthecat
My alarm bells immediately went off when I heard that the siren call was based on the Dies Irae. If there is one thing I learned from Sideways it is that Dies Irae = Death. And (SPOILER) Elsa technically dies in the movie. And I think after the moment she 'died' you don't hear that call anymore. I legitimately am blown away.

6:50 "Does Water have Memory?" No I have chronic alzheimers.

Hey Matpat, I'm actually an artist and now I'm actually inspired to draw elsa in a shining atmosphere with an ice castle,. Like that scene where he's hacking the door with the axe, just an ice castle, and elsa and olaf. I'd even send you the finished product of it if you'd like. It sounds like a fun drawing.
  • @alexchan1948
Lost in the woods and your the inspiration by Chicago sounds exactly the same. Even cinemasins pointed it out
