Hidden in the hills of South Canterbury a small order of monks live a life of poverty, obedience and sacrifice.

The ultra-traditional order – called the Transalpine Redemptorists - is expanding in numbers, attracting young people to give up the pleasures of the world.

Find out how they live off the grid and why they’ve chosen this simple, structured, and often solitary existence.

What the reporter doesnt understand is that compared to knowing and experiencing God, everything else is garbage, even playing music. She keeps going on about "all that they're giving up" but she doesnt get it, those brothers dont see it as giving up anything, to them the world is empty and transitory, and when you know God, when you've experienced the sweetness of God theres literally nothing or nobody that can compare. She doesnt get this because she doesnt know God, she only knows "The world" and because of this she cant comprehend trading in the world for God.

I am always amazed at how happy cloistered nuns and monks are. Mother Angelica's nuns will talk with big smiles on their faces. I could never lead this live but I, a sinner, envy their joy and peace.
  • Nothing could be greater than to give your life to God. Greetings from Ireland.☘️

Very Franciscan! What this young man gives up are the distractions of life that pull us away from listening to the voice of Christ, opening up to God's grace. I have no doubt it can seem hard, but the joy of that life: immeasurable.

If there were no ascetics and monastics humanity would be utterly dead. New Zealand is better of for having these folks.
