In this episode we discuss some speed bumps we’ve encountered while researching and testing out the DJI Mic 2 during our usual in-depth review process. Something isn’t sounding right so we contacted DJI and their engineers said that there is a bug that they’ll fix in an upcoming firmware update. We’ll finish our review when that firmware ships. Let’s take a look and have a quick listen!

If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. Update: See the final review over at https://youtu.be/vj9LGlLfbkw The issue was that DJI shipped me a Mic 2 with pre-production firmware installed. Once we installed the production firmware, the audio quality improved substantially. Update 24 Jan 2024: DJI Sent the production firmware and I've updated the receiver and transmitters (v04.02.01.13). Now we will get back to testing! Update 23 Jan 2024: Confirmed that my copy has a pre-production firmware version. The DJI site does not have the first production firmware version available for download so I'm working with DJI to get my kit updated. More to come, hopefully soon! Update 22 Jan 2024: I'm working with DJI to see if there's a problem with my copy or a more general issue. So far, we have found that when transmitting wirelessly and recording to camera, the sound is SUBSTANTIALLY higher quality. When recording 32-bit float to the transmitter, it sounds like it does in this video (not great). Tests are ongoing. This was all recorded on the transmitter in 32-bit float mode with the transmitter’s built-in microphone.

I'm a camera guy Curtis, but i know that i can always come to this channel to listen to good, solid advice and info. I bought your Zoom f6 course and found it to be an invaluable resource to get up to speed on that device. Well worth the money it cost. Thanks Curtis.
  • With Firmware Version 04.02.01.13 , (as of 01/21/23) I'm experiencing very nice and equal sound quality on both mics, both with noise canceling on or off. I have both receivers and transmitters set to +1 gain. Tried them on iPhone 15 Pro, Go Pro 12 Black and 360 Ace Pro. I'm very happy with them. I also have the DJI Mic 1, and find the sound to be as good or better.

I cannot even understand what was wrong with the recording, listened it 10 times, still not getting it 😅😅

this is why your my go to guy for reviews straight to the point!
  • @ShroomTrooper69
You in fact did not waste my time and got straight to the facts! Loved it, came here to give you that like 👍🏻
  • @thetruemorg
I had one of these 32-bit float recorders and I loved it once you got over the wonkiness of 32-bit float... If they're able to overcome this sound thing, being able to just send it to my phone means I don't have to do hours of uploading because I edit videos on my phone or on my tablet. Just being able to Bluetooth it to a source sounds amazing. I look forward to this full review. Thank you. I always love your channel
  • @mavs8888
Thank you for this short information... I'm looking forward to the follow up. Your information always helps a lot! (even in the EU hehe!)

I did a test with a EDUTIGE ETM-001 plugged into the MIc 2 and WOW what a huge improvement. The built in mics have heavy noise reduction enabled even with the "Noise" reduction option disabled. Only issue was I could not plug the EDUTIGE ETM-001 directly into the MIC 2 as it made it crackle, but with an extension cable it was ok.
  • @ailearners
Had to give you a follow for your honesty:)
  • @njon23
Thanks, Curtis! I was just about to return mine.

Hi Curtis, I've heard a recording from a guy that used both Mic 2s at once, and the Mics did not sound consistent. One mic was dark and dull and the other had a noticeable difference with more fidelity. I like everything I've seen about these mics, but not what I've heard. They beat the Rode Wireless Pro in most ways except the most important, THE SOUND. Anyway, one question for your review: Does the noise cancelation work when using an external lav? Thanks!
  • @Clough42
Something really weird: I can only hear the artifacts on certain devices. On my laptop speakers (and all of the speakers in my HDMI monitors) it's clearly audible. In my Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones on a Scarlett 2i2, I can only hear it at very low volume levels. At normal listening levels, I can't hear it at all. On my living room surround system, played from a Chromecast, I can't hear it at all sitting in a normal listening position, but sitting in a chair off to the side, it's impossible to miss.
  • @WORTHITORNOT
Sounds like a lot of processing was done via noise reduction somehow.
  • @randomgeocacher
Honest of them to not field cherry-picked reviewer samples, hopefully they’ll get the audio right in the consumer sales. Looking forward to your videos as always, let’s hope they’ll get you fixed hw / fw/ sw soon! :)

Was wondering where the review is, I trust your content most for audio gear
  • @TimothyDowd
Hi Curtis, I just came across a feature of the DJI Mic 2 which surprised me... I have connected it to my iPhone 15 Pro and my MacBook Air 15" M2 to test connectivity... I just plugged it into a charger and it automatically connected to my MacBook Air as an audio interface directing the audio output to the device. It took me a while to figure out why my YouTube video I was watching had no sound 😀
  • It's worth mentioned in your full review (when it comes out) that without a receiver, there's no way at all to change any settings on the transmitter. So, if you someone was thinking about using a transmitter alone as an audio recorder, there's no way to tun on/off the low cut filter, set it to 32bit float, or do anything other than toggle the noise cancellation. Strange given the transmitters can be bought standalone.
