Bunny, Star Trek's director of photography, Jerry Finnerman, shot all women with a soft-focus lens. This was an old-film-school way of hidng an actress's flaws and also giving her an ethereal, dreamy quality. He wanted the women he shot to look their best: "Never shoot up a woman's nose." (No low angles), he said.

Childress is a hardened lithium miner who has lived a long time in tough conditions relying only himself. Eve comes along and he is attracted to her. When she runs out into the storm Childress bravely runs after her, not because she is beautiful but because he knows the dangers of the planet and knows she will be killed. Once he finds her and brings her back he doesn't like having things done for him because of his ego and because he likes to think of himself as self sufficient. He does, however, take her advice about putting the pans out in the sand storm so he does have respect for her. He finally comes around to realizing he would like someone to share his life with. Someone equal and self sufficient.

The Enterprise has warp engines for faster than light travel and impulse engines for sublight travel. The warp engines are powered by the collision of matter and antimater. The lithium crystals, or dilithium in later episodes, is used to regulate the flow of the antimater. The impulse engines are basically nuclear fusion reactors.

Harry Mudd! This is a good early episode for demonstrating one of my favorite things about Spock: his deep capacity for snarkiness. The looks he gives when the other men fall for the girls are priceless.

I lost my dad 10 years ago when I was 53, so now I'm 63, but I miss him a lot. So I always appreciate your shout outs to your dad! Brings back a lot of fond memories of my own.

As the ship is on a 5 year mission and at any time could be interacting with civilisations too far away from the Federation for the 'Government' to provide guidance a very important role for the Captain is as a diplomat and the ship sort of also acts as an embassy.
  • I always took this episode to confirm that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that no magic pill is going to change that.

One of Kirk's unspoken duties is to romance any compatible alien women. 😂

Back then, the camera "filter" they used to enhance the aesthetic of the women was nothing more than smearing Vaseline on the lens. It was crude but very effective. You gotta give it to the ingenuity of the photography director. They made lemonade out of lemons. Desilu Productions, founded by Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnez, were extraordinarily innovative in television production. Their legacy will never be forgotten.

Harcourt Fenton Mudd "Harry Mudd" is one of my favorite characters!! His over the top cartoonish behavior is most amusing.

In this era of Star Trek storytelling, the primary mission of the Enterprise is exploration : literally, to explore new worlds, to seek out new life and civilizations. The Enterprise can be re-directed to other missions by Starfleet when necessary, but generally, the standing mission is to be explorers - to expand the knowledge and beneficial influence of the United Federation of Planets.

I had to look their destination: Ophiuchus is a large constellation straddling the celestial equator. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek , meaning "serpent-bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping a snake. The writers really did their research.

Cool video, My relationship of 5 years ended a month ago. The love of my life decided to leave me, I really love her so much I can’t stop thinking about her, I’ve tried my very best to get her back in my life, but to no avail, I’m frustrated, I don’t see my life with anyone else. I’ve done my best to get rid of the thoughts of her, but I can’t, I don’t know why I’m saying this here, I really miss her and just can’t stop thinking about her.
  • You're correct the episode is about self confidence. The change of makeup is just TV shorthand to clue in the audience that the episode is about self confidence. I served in the U.S. Navy as a Quartermaster. Unlike the Army, a Quartermaster in the Navy is a navigation specialist. So I was on the bridge all the time and worked with most of the officers. The Captain of a Navy ship is the ultimate authority on his ship, unless there is an Admiral or Commodore aboard. He's a line officer which means he has trained his entire career to become a Captain. He has served in most positions onboard ship that are required to make the ship function effectively as a Navy ship. Service officers are specialists in a particular field. Doctor McCoy is a service officer. The Enterprise is a warship at heart. She is tasked with exploring the frontier. At this time it's the wild west era of the Federation.

A lot of fun, I always considered this a puff piece episode, but with your reaction I have come to appreciate this episode more. A lot more going on then I remembered. Thank you for these reactions videos.

The simplest but most significant job of the captain - in addition to the obvious job of being the leader and commander the ship, mission, and crew - is that a captain is completely responsible for everything that happens on his ship & during the mission, and is also responsible for every action - for good or ill - of his entire crew.

These videos are simply brilliant. Your take on these is fascinating, and I'm learning a whole new take on these episodes I thought I knew so well. So good.

“Unusual reading on male board members .. detecting high respiration patterns ..” “Erections ..” 😂😂 I laughed out loud, wasn’t expecting this .. to just blurt out loud what is quietly not even talked about is like taking a sledgehammer to the 60’s : )

My mom, who sadly, is no longer in this world, use to watch the original series with me, and one of the things I remember about her reactions was, whenever this episode was on the TV, and she knew the "kitchen scene" between Childress & Eve was about to happen, she would tell everyone, "Watch this. This is cute." She found the relationship between Ben Childress & Eve to be relatable & endearing, and she would laugh knowingly at how Childress & Eve tried so hard to pretend they didn't really like each other.
  • @McBeelzebub
Childress makes sense to me. Have you ever known a person who’s lived on their own for years? They get very used to having their own way and the introduction of another person into that, who disrupts everything with change and compromise can really mess with them. Even if you’re single, always have people in your life who will force you out of your comfort zone, at least that’s what I think.
