My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie commentary reaction

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a charming and fun movie that we loved making a commentary for. It does a great job of showing the struggles of a woman, played by Nia Vardalos, trying to find her own identity and marry the man she loves without sacrificing her culture and heritage.

  • I really appreciate that Toula's "makeover" scene is really something done in service of her own happiness rather than to fit an image, impress a man, etc. It's a transformation that's intrinsically tied to her confidence as she breaks new ground in her education, career, and self-worth. It's just so wholesome.

I was the maid of honor at a greek wedding two months ago. I'm NOT greek. I also don't speak greek. I had absolutely no idea what was happening the entire day, but I got three entire bags full of presents - golden necklaces, rings, the works. People congratulated ME on the wedding. I'm still trying to figure out what was going on there.
  • I love that as uncomfortable as Ian’s parents look, you never see them say “don’t marry her” or put the family down in any way. They just look super awkward the entire time lol
  • I do feel for Ian’s parents at the family get together. When you’re expecting an intimate dinner party and you turn up to a huge party where you’re outnumbered by strangers who ALL know each other. As an introvert that’s a nightmare. Energy drained within 30 minutes.

The “you don’t eat meat?” My mom had the same situation with my Italian grandmother. My mom was vegetarian at the time, and when she refused meat. My grandmother said “I’ll make you chicken.” This movie hits so close to home.
  • Fun fact: The best friend of Ian Miller is the actual husband of the actress who plays Tula! I was shocked by that, but it makes his dialogue that much funnier.

Honestly as a Mexican, my sister and I LOVED this movie growing up bc of how similar it was to our family and customs. Same with Bend It Like Beckham. Big loud families are just so universal and we loved seeing the similarities despite being different cultures.
  • When momma comes out with the bundt cake with the plant in it, and the lady in the background cries out "YOU FIXED IT!" so triumphantly- I lose it every single time 😂😂😂

I love how Sam is like "wtf..." and Steph (and I) are like "Yep. This is normal." Slavic-South Mediterranean solidarity right there.

Aunt Voula walking over to Ian at the party and saying '...let me touch your hair' was her actually improving b/c she forgot her lines. They kept it in the final cut.
  • One thing I love is how when they invite the family, they invite THE WHOLE family!
  • I am not ashamed to say I RAN to watch this. My Big Fat Greek Wedding is my all-time favorite comfort movie. I am so excited to watch your reactions! I hope you watch the second one and, later, the third one when it becomes available online.
  • “Why you have to leaaavvveee me!” My dad’s not Greek but he resembles this emotional blackmail! 😂
  • Yay, this movie is a delight! My friend Laura DeLuca and I saw this in the theater in high school, and her eyes just kept getting bigger and bigger and finally she grabbed my hand when we saw the parents' living room and she whispered "How the fuck did they get pictures of my grandma's living room?!!" 🤣
  • To be fair to Ian, if you recognise someone from somewhere, you usually try and think WHERE you saw them. The travel agent wasn’t the place he remembered Toula so he assumed she was someone else until she confirmed.

"It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this" i see you Steph 👀 lmao
  • I enjoyed this so much! 😂 When I first watched this movie, the greek grandma seemed so funny, but years later I just thought “This poor woman lives with PTSD all the time!!!”
  • My sister and I always holler "classy" when we think something is absolutely God awful in reference to the bridesmaid dress reveal. And then once we resolve it, the other one yells, "I fixed it!" for the flower in the bundt cake ☺️
  • As a Greek I love this movie and yes it is very accurate! Especially the "Nick" part. My dad and 2 of his cousins are all named Nick and many other people in my family.
  • “Positive reinforcement, I don’t know what to do with this!” - Stef I love you for saying it out loud so simply. That’s it. That’s the struggle.
