Published 2023-05-14
In this video I will compare Luminance colored pencils by Caran d'Ache to Lightfast colored pencils by Derwent. I will share the pro's and con's of each of these pencils and share how I use them in my own artwork.

This was really helpful in explaining how the different qualities of each pencil brand can help me to choose what pencil I need for different stages of my drawing. I just always grabbed a pencil for the color that I need. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your preferred process for what pencils you use at each stage. I still find myself using my polychromos pencils the most because they were my first favorite brand I used. I’m slowly starting to incorporate my luminance and lightfast pencils as I get more comfortable with them. Both pieces turned out incredible!

Wow, I am so happy to have found your channel! I will binge watch every video of yours the weeks to come. I used to love to draw but somehow I quit 25 y ago. Last couple of months I have started again and I love it. Thank you so much for the inspiration and knowledge you share. ❤

Both are beautiful, but yellow is quite hard to see on a screen.
  • My favorite pencils are the Derwent lightfast, I also love the Derwent lightfast paper, I have tried both pencils on that paper and although it is a paper that brings out the best in many pencils, I feel that it works better with oil-predominant pencils, with more waxy pencils I think not it's so perfect. A greeting from Spain 😊

I agree with what you said wholeheartedly and have found the exact technique the most useful. I always start with the paper and match my pencils to it. I have found that using all my pencils for what they are best for. The polychromes are great for a harder pencil and are kept at a needle-sharp tip. I love their pinks for pink flowers and grey-green. I have discovered that the Luminance pencils have the consistency of a colourless blender with a ton of pigment. As you, I like to use them later on to get excellent blending. I also have Pablos which I had difficulty finding just how to use best. I do like the thinner barrel for those fine details. I am finally enjoying the Pablos for that reason. I would like to know how others like to use the Pablo pencils.

Don't have the patience for colored pencils but still such a beautiful medium. I'd probably choose luminance to lay down more pigment.
  • as someone who owns both sets I will say I enjoy both quite a bit and prefer to have them join forces as they literally become a magical set of endless possibilities when they work together. ironically I find the Derwent light fast to be easier to blend and much softer than the luminance contrary to what the video says but all good just my opinion. The luminance takes some getting used to if you started off using prisma color. this is due to the fact that the luminance are much harder than the prisma and this can be discouraging at first. in which case I recommend the Derwent if ur gonna level up from prisma. however if you started off with polychromos then ur gonna find the luminance to be quite wonderful. honestly u can't go wrong with either set unless u have to get in debt just to get a set.
  • i started my colored pencil journey with Polychromos, then discovered D.Lightfast was great for blending. At one time i bought one of every brand available and found i really hated Luminance. Now i'm revisiting this brand, so this video was very helpful in my re-exploration. I have also found which paper i use makes a big difference. So much to think about!
  • Thank you for your video! I was just wondering why you don't leave a white border on your artwork? I was always told I'm supposed to leave a border. Again thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos, I know they help a lot of people.😄
  • Stunning drawing! I would love a cheat sheet with all the main characteristics of each brand. I'm still having a hard time remembering which brand are oil and wax based. I know Prismacolor break, tombow are not lightfast, holbein has the most opaque white. Please help!!!!!
  • @bebopkirby
I’ve tried most of the major brands and l just go by hardness and softness. Everything else is not that important to me. These two brands are both toward the softer type compared to Polychromos, and a couple of others. l don’t have anywhere near full sets of either pencils, but one thing l can say is that if you go by looks and the build quality of the pencil, Luminance wins hands down. It almost hurts to sharpen a Luminance.
  • Have both brands the range of colours are slightly different in both brands like using them both on my artwork.
  • @justinsmet
I have been doing colored pencil art 5 years and most of my art has been with prismacolor and dickblick colored pencils, never have used any other brands looking into other brands because i would like to do art that i could sell but the current pricing now adays are crazy high
