girls planet 999 was a korean survival show, airing from august to october of 2021, which featured 99 trainees from three countries - korea, japan and china (including taiwan and hong kong) to create a new global 9-member girl group. the show was a spiritual successor to the produce series, a re-launch of sorts of the brand after the voting scandal from the previous seasons.
the show featured a new concept of ‘cells’, where three trainees were grouped together based on similar traits or experiences and would traverse the show together. if one member from a cell got eliminated, they all got eliminated. this mechanism was controversial, and short-lived as it didn’t appear in the second season ‘boys planet’.
at the end of the show, the top 9 trainees debuted in the group kep1er.
