Gabe represents the beauty of a disabled man. He can see and believe in pure goodness unlike many in their lifetime. Some call it an ignorance but he has the pure gift of simplicity. He puts value in the right things like love and forgiveness.

I have never been so moved and emotional in my life. This movie changed me. When uncle Gabe is trying to call St. Peter to open the gates for Troy, notice the fence gate closes in the background. This too me symbolizes Troy speaking to them in some way. The fence is being closed. They are all inside the fence. It was built to keep them in. Incredible scene.
  • The best line of the movie to me “that’s the way that go” and runs off. He wasn’t shocked or surprised he knew all along what would happen in the end.

Its a blessing in heaven and a curse on earth to have something from God that nobody understands

Anybody else notice the fence close on it's own after he said "Troy"?
  • the ending paid off and made up a little bit for all the sad drama between the family. Denzel is our finest thespian.

Troy was with them in spirit as the fence closed

I love that the sky opened into the shape of an angel. That's beautiful!
  • A theater director at my school was telling us about this time August Wilson came to watch his production of Fences. They were struggling with the ending and felt like he embarrassed himself in front of him, so when he came up to him afterward and apologized, Mr. Wilson said "That's okay, no one ever gets the ending right." Denzel got the ending right.

He has 2 unsuccessful attempts and hits that third curve ball from out the corner!

Anyone else tears get out of control watching this scene. It hits you no matter how tough and cold you are.

In the book, the third time Gabriel's trumpet didn't make any noise, it was said he had a frightening realization that no sane person would be able to take. He then started to do an eerie dance. The trumpet was supposed to alert St. Peter to open the gates, but it made next to no noise. Sad to say but, those gates didn't open for Troy.

Absolutely breathtaking and amazing. How beautiful the most high God is.
  • This scene is so incredibly inspiring. Troy was not the best father or person, but he meant well. He was battling things from his upbringing and he got into Heaven, wow....God is good. Just look at the back gate close, he walked into Heaven, he got through!!
