Planting a small forest in 24 hours (1440 trees)

A Tree a Minute: As there are 1440 minutes in a day, and I love planting trees, I decided to plant a tree a minute for 24 hours. It was (swear meaningfully) hard.

For my 40th birthday, my best mates gave me a self-flown joy flight in a light plane. When given the controls I headed for home. What was at first a wonderful sense of flying became a bizarre reality check, seeing so much green turning to brown in the summer heat. Most creek lines were bare, and the general lack of bushland within the giant quilt of farmland was shocking. You don’t see this contrast from the ground, always seeing a tree in the foreground, or a hedgerow in the middle distance. A single big gumtree can give the impression of health, yet the area I live in is a mostly deforested farmed zone exploited for its impressive topsoil. Having tapped into the potential of a 24 hour period of life, and since I love planting trees, I decided to plant a tree a minute on a friend's dairy farm by reforesting a creekline. Low and behold, planting that many mixed trees on muddy terrain, slipping on my arse every other minute, is one of the hardest, most rewarding single days of my life.

The saying goes "The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is today". I look forward to seeing them grow.

  • I'm not going to say that the world needs more people like Beau. I'm bad at telling people what to do. I'm just going to say that I hope one day I can become like him.
  • We're getting close to our 2 year update!! I hope we get to see how his daughters 2 trees are doing as well as the main batch.

“Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in." - Great Work Beau!

Hey Beau, saw you were posting this video today so I decided to prepare by doing a challenge of my own: I work a desk job but luckily the city park is a minute walk away. I decided to run a 3/4 mile loop each hour over the course of my 8 hr. shift. A 6 mile day during my 9-5 isn’t too shabby. Will be running my last 3/4 mile shortly! Haven’t seen the video yet cause I plan to watch it tonight with the wife. I’m sure it will delight as always. Thanks for the inspo.

I really enjoyed what he said about not making the entire farmland forest, but just the steep and wet parts where biodiversity can really shine. That’s the compromise we need more places to make a difference

I grew up in a small commune. In my teens I worked in gardening. I've planted hundreds of trees. Coming to visit and saying all of these trees frown up made me cry. Amongst the trees I planted were giant Sequoia and the thought of one my descendents seeing them in a hundred years from now is very exciting

I really can't stress enough how much I want to see this after a few year's progress
  • Beau, you are honestly one of my favourite people on the Internet. Your ideas, your energy, your passion, they are the kinds of things that make living on this blue Earth worth it. You're great.

I love a Beau Miles binge, man you're excellent. Protect Beau at all costs!

Just binged about 20 of your videos before I finally got the urge to comment - your perspective is unique and inspiring, keep it up because I know how hard it can be to stay creative! Also, I'm keen to see how the mini forest is coming along!

It would be amazing to see an update after a year to see how they look and how many survived. We want to see how the landscape changes over time! Who thinks this would be a great thing to see?? Great work Beau! World needs more and more of this. :)

“70/30, I give it a 30% chance. The trouble with being an optimist is that 30% happens quite a bit!” Hahaha! Love it
  • Beau Miles: Set up a donation page or donation on youtube so we can all chip in to help you buy trees for further projects. Absolutely love what you have done.🌲🌲🌲
  • I hope we get yearly updates. I think it's wonderful, what you're doing. May you and yours be blessed
  • I was really hoping this was filmed 2 years ago so we could see it now. Guess that's the state of things. Good work Beau

I feel like those last two trees might well have the most impact. Life is not just about the things we do, but it's about how those actions affect others. Raising a conscientious and environmentally aware child is bound to have an impact, and letting her play with those trees is a small, but not insignificant part of that.
  • How about an update? Would love to see how they have done over the last 11 months.
  • @Ben-st9jg
Please do an update on the forest! super excited to see how much it has grown yet
