The police chief of Tampa, Florida, has resigned following an incident last month in which she flashed her badge to get favorable treatment during a traffic stop while riding in a golf cart.

“It is unacceptable for any public employee, and especially the city's top law enforcement leader, to ask for special treatment because of their position,” Castor said in a statement. Chief Mary O’Connor stepped down upon the mayor’s request following an internal review, according to Castor.

The incident took place on the evening of Nov. 12, when O’Connor and her spouse were riding in a golf cart on streets of Oldsmar, Florida, near Tampa. A Pinellas County Sheriff deputy pulled the couple over because the golf cart did not have a license plate. The deputy’s body camera captured footage of the interaction, which was posted by the Tampa Police Department.

O’Connor, sitting in the passenger seat, asks the deputy “Are you recording,” and then tells him “I’m the police chief in Tampa ... I’m hoping that you’ll just let us go tonight,” as she shows him her badge. “You looked familiar,” the deputy responds, before letting the couple go.

"Is your camera on?" by itself should be grounds for termination.

"Is your camera on?" "Yes" Commits the misconduct anyway. 🤣

Corruption is everywhere. Should have graciously accepted the ticket and made herself an example of what TO DO.

This is pathetic! 🤷‍♂️This is just straight, pathetic that she would ask him if his camera is 📷 on, and then put him on the spot and ask him to let her go! This is everything that’s wrong with this damn country now!🙄🙄🙄

For anyone wondering, she was forced to resign from this.

The Police Chief of Tampa, Florida resigned on Monday after body cam footage showed her asking a deputy to "just let us go" from a traffic stop. Mayor Jane Castor said in a statement that she'd requested and received the resignation of Chief Mary O'Connor following an internal affairs investigation into the incident. "It is unacceptable for any public employee, and especially the city's top law enforcement leader, to ask for special treatment because of their position," Castor wrote.

I like how she handed the office a get out of jail free card.
  • @staciepaul
Why doesn't the public trust the police? They seem so moral and ethical.
  • @ElendilSociety
I would’ve treated her like any other person I pulled over. She should be forced to resign over that. If you don’t think you have to obey rules as the POLICE CHIEF, the. you can’t command a city of Cops to uphold the law….
