At this year's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, we may see quad corks in Big Air Snowboarding or in Freestyle Skiing -- and we'll see quad twists and quad jumps in Figure Skating. But have we reached the limit of what's possible? To do a quad, a skater's got less than a second to turn their body four times in the air. WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez set out to find out why five...is almost impossible.

"so we're probably not gonna see a Quint any time soon" The moment someone says those words you know someone's going to do it
  • @Lisa-ud5nz
Well according to Yuzuru Hanyu there is an athlete that could possibly jump a quint and that's Boyang Jin. He's even anticipating the day he will see Boyang Jin jump a quint. Despite what science says, Yuzu's belief in Boyang Jin is greater.

They said the same thing about the quad 20 years ago
  • @isabels451
there’re 13 yo girls doing quads at this point anything is possible
  • @redcrest5
Wow, this makes me feel even more respect for people like Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen who make those quads look so effortless. It’s cool to think that when we see them skate, we’re seeing the peak of the human body’s achievements.
  • @ExplosionChimp
It’s official then. They need to add ramps to figure skating.

"Why it's impossible to land a quintuple jump" Yuzu: Brian, please hold my pooh san Brian Orser: Oh sure Yuzu: *inhales* *shouts* BOYANG JIN

4:46 Just a friendly warning, don't land on one leg on a trampoline (epecially while spinning too lol) It's instinctual to do that, but on trampoline physics it's dangerous. Some chick at gymnastics told me she blew out her knee doing that.

Finally, figure skating getting the credit it deserves, so many people think it’s all about the glitter and sequins that’s just the icing on top.
  • @elleryrillaine
Quads have always been painful to watch since, even if you've trained so hard, you can still fail to land perfectly. Figure skaters have strenuous training to achieve that so, kudos to them.
  • Ilia Malinin already landed the Quad Axel 4½ rotations and landed the quint toeloop a few times during practice.

That professor looks like he's seen about as much sleep as me.

Video: quints are almost impossible Yuzu, Boyang Jin, Shoma Uno: I'm about to end this man's whole career
  • Get a bit sick of how American media ignores all the other top skaters that aren’t Nathan Chen
  • @AAAAAMMM
“I was Quad King before Nathan Chen unseated me,” lol I never saw a title transfer to someone elee like that
  • @Aeri2012
"We wont see a quintuple anytime soon" .... yuzuru thought otherwise 😭💓
