You wake up starving and just want to get breakfast in! Now, this might seem like an obvious one, but the worst thing you can do is stuff your face full with heavy food just before heading out for a run. It can be surprising how “hungry” you can feel and still go out for a run and feel good once you’re out there. Ideally, try to plan your day so that your eating and runs are at least 1 hour to 90mins apart. And if you have to eat within this time then make sure it is something light like a cereal bar or energy bar.

Even though there are lot of fizzy energy drinks out there, they’re not always the best thing to go for just before a run. The carbonation of fizzy drinks it can make you feel really uncomfortable on a run. So, fizzy drinks tend to sit in your stomach longer than still ones and aren’t ingested as quickly. This causes more sloshing around and actually they end up hydrating you less. And on top of that, fizzy drinks can also prevent you from ingesting nutrients from food already in your stomach. So stick to still drinks and don’t drink less than 10 to 15 minutes before a run.

Caffeine can be great for sports performance, especially in endurance sports. But the timing of its consumption can be crucial when wanting to avoid mid-run embarrassment! I know this might sound a bit crude but it’s something you should genuinely think about before runs. So, if you have had a quick perk-you-up caffeinated delight, make sure you give yourself at least half an hour or one trip to the toilet before you head out!

  • Haha, "do not consider going for a bike ride before going for a run" :D. Made my day!

No consumption of dairy products 2hrs before a run. I have some bad memories about it. Best pre run snack - Banana bread with peanut butter. Works wonders!

I would add putting on after shave / hair gel because it will burn the eyes when you start to sweat.
  • Don't eat high fibre foods before your runs or you will feel like you are getting the runs!!!
  • @gingerdaniel
Always check your gps has enough battery power for the run!

💯 new runner here taking in quarantine running with my partner. As a basketball player I have experience with making some mistakes before practices and games which have helped me with running. HOWEVER, way more to consider before running. Won’t make those mistakes again. 😅

I regretted having 3 cafe lattes before a triathlon..
  • Once came back from the club at 2am and woke up to run at 5am with alcohol in my belly - it was the longest run ever😂

In college we used to give blood and then go for a short run. It required a lot less beer afterwards. ;-)
  • I haven’t done a tri yet but in cycling as well most of these apply, I have thrown up in one of my first races due to eating, love your guys segment on breakfast or fasting, but after that throw up I have been a faster, and that caffeine bit is no joke, here on big island Hawaii last thing you want is to be racing in the kona heat with 5k in to a race and now you got bubble guts....

Make sure you stretch for 10 mins before and after a run or you risk getting injured. Many people forget stretching ankles which are complicated joints that need warming up by rotating clockwise and anti-clockwise for 1 minute. Putting on deodorant is advisable and cleaning teeth (I don't know what advantage this gives but I feel better with a fresh mouth?!). Thanks.
