This song literally saved my life. Growing poor in Mexico, we didn't have much, but my dad kept a temperamental Ford Mustang that was way past its prime. On the night I got a scorpion sting on my neck, was the one night the car decided to work. I was losing consciousness and in full-blown panic attack, when my mom started playing this song. To keep me calm, my mom started singing this song because she know I would sing along, so I did. I managed to keep along until I fainted, just in time as we arrived at the hospital. That was 25 years ago. I still thank this song for saving my life.

People don't realize how much of a compliment saying "you have an old person's music taste" is
  • On a dark desert highway Cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas Rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night There she stood in the doorway I heard the mission bell And I was thinkin' to myself "This could be heaven or this could be hell" Then she lit up a candle And she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor I thought I heard them say "Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place (such a lovely place) Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year (any time of year) You can find it here" Her mind is Tiffany-twisted She got the Mercedes-Benz, uh She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys That she calls friends How they dance in the courtyard Sweet summer sweat Some dance to remember Some dance to forget So I called up the Captain "Please bring me my wine" He said, "We haven't had that spirit here Since 1969" And still, those voices are calling From far away Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say "Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place (such a lovely place) Such a lovely face They're livin' it up at the Hotel California What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise) Bring your alibis" Mirrors on the ceiling The pink champagne on ice And she said, "We are all just prisoners here Of our own device" And in the master's chambers They gathered for the feast They stab it with their steely knives But they just can't kill the beast Last thing I remember I was running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before "Relax, " said the night man "We are programmed to receive You can check out any time you like But you can never leave!"

My Dad used to listen to this when I was a kid. He had been in Vietnam, and he was hurting during those years trying to put it behind him. He told me this song was about the war, and for years I believed that. Some of the lyrics made sense and the way he explained it seemed plausible. I found out years later that this song was about different themes, mostly with "the high life in Los Angeles" as the Eagles themselves said. It just goes to show how song lyrics can mean different things to different people, and no way of interpreting a song is wrong. Listening to it seemed to give my Dad some measure of peace back then, so I'm glad that's what he always thought it was about. So thanks Dad for introducing me to this song. Every time I hear it I think of you and what you went through over there for our country. RIP Dad....

I can't believe this song doesn't have a music video. The lyrics are perfect for a story told through a music video.

My Dad loved The Eagles and played them alot when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, I know the words to many of their songs - He was a fantastic Dad...........but he was killed by a drunk driver in the summer of 1986 ........................but he still lives in me, and these songs keep my memories of him strong. I miss him so much. The pain is as strong now as it was then, it never goes away.

I am a high school student in South Korea. As you expected, I'm spedning quite a lot of difficult times these days. It is extremely hard and sometimes even depressing to study in my school. It's because I really can't get away from the thoughts that my school is the very hotel california and my learning is just devoting everything to survive and get a well life in this Korean society. This music is the only song which can comfort me a little bit due to its criticism or sarcasm about capitalism and mammonism. I really love this ironical song, even though you might think it is pretty weird that Asian high school student listens to 70's American rock.
