Robotics change man's life after losing both arms in horrific workplace accident | Australian Story

Published 2019-12-02
Ghanim Al Shnen was working on a building site in November 2018 in Sydney, Australia, when a metal bar he was holding struck overhead wires. He suffered catastrophic injuries that resulted in the amputation of both his arms.

Now, in a world-first procedure, he is being fitted with two robotic arms that he will control with his mind.

Overseeing this complex process is renowned orthapaedic surgeon Dr Munjed al Muderis. The two men have much in common. Both fled Iraq in fear of their lives, arriving in Australia by boat. Both spent time in detention centres where they used the time to educate themselves.

Australian Story filmed with Ghanim over six months, following this medical miracle as it unfolded.

  • With an attitude like his, Australia would be lucky to have him. I hope he continues to improve, that immigration see sense and let him stay, and that his family is able to join him ASAP.

How cruel of australia to send his family away from him. His mental health took an obvious battering as well as his poor kids needing their daddy. his family pose no threat to australia whatsoever. I pray that someone in authority there sees the benefit to them all and ensures that this loving family is reunited in australia permanently

"I lost my hands, to see my family" I'm not religious but I like to think that we're all connected and that collective thought has real world impact. We should all pray for this great mans health.

  • The first time I have heard a Doctor or anyone for that matter be realistic and say “you can’t even wipe your own bottom”. Good on her.

Wait!.... Is this the amazing surgeon who helped the courageous farmer who got caught under farm machinery and lost both legs?!! He's awesome. Thank you for training and learning and being here in Australia to help us! It's so easy to lump refugees into a 'scab' category....this should help Aussies understand there are extenuating circumstances for everyone.

What do you mean Mind Control? All human body parts are mind controlled. In that case, I have a flesh and blood body that is controlled by my mind.
  • What a great story. All the best mate. I'm shattered with what happened in the senate today. To the coalition government, shame shame shame.
