Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*

Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration

These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll

If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

If you're new around here, Venomoth is a Psychic/Flying type, you can't change my mind.

  • For those wondering about blackout training on Brock's Geodude, here are some numbers: Tackle - Staryu, at lv16 has a 1.7% chance to 10hko - Geodude has a 20.2% chance to 10hko - To get reliable ranges, Staryu has a 99.5% chance to 17hko and Geodude has a 99.7% chance to 14hko. - So it's just likely that you're going to lose trying to get the trainer boosted EXP from the Geodude. Struggle - Better damage ranges - 25.4% 6hko - 100% 8hko - 1/2 damage in recoil (2-4 per turn totaling 12-14 damage [Geodude has 29 HP]) - Geodude's tackle does 4-5 regular damage and 5-7 with a crit. If every hit is regular then it will attack 5 times for 20-25 damage. - 25 + 14 = 39 so Staryu would survive with 3 HP (it has 42 health at lv16) - If Geodude crits even once then Staryu loses and just wastes time Summary: - Tackle isn't an option - Struggle is high risk, but could give a bit of trainer boosted experience - Grinding wild Pokemon is by far the most reliable way to play the early game

I got in an argument a while back with another content creator who was dead convinced that starmie would be the best possible Pokémon to solo run fire red with. Turned out he hadn’t actually done the run; or any solo runs, didn’t understand how growth rates work or the fundamental metrics of success. This is why actually doing these runs to gather this data is important. Ran into some other Scott’s Thoughts fans in the comments making the same points, great community guys!
  • @s4pphi
Shouts out jrose, then forgets Erika. Poetry.
  • @BubbaJoeSwag
The in depth explanation about first stage water types in the beginning is one of the many things that set you apart. That level of effort to craft a story about the video we are about to watch is unnecessary but very appreciated.
  • @TastyMeerkat
Venomoth Fact #34: Venomoth occasionally uses Staryu and Starmie as personal fidget spinners. This is a surprisingly well paid job that has gone on for generations.
  • It was cool to see Scott in a Jrose play through. Now it’s cool to see Jrose in a Scott play through. Will MDB show up!
  • Thank you for the wonderful video again Scott~ It probably wouldnt save that much time, but I think Scott couldve used Swift for Sabrina because he didnt need to teach Ice Beam until the R22 rival. For Erika you're overleveled anyway and have Psychic, I don't think theres another trainer its useful for
  • @Ectar2003
Me: "It feels like it's been a bit since that last Scott video" Scott, 1 hour later: "I'm soloing the main series pokemon game with every species" Me: "Excellent. Have a thumbs up."
  • @reshawshid
"Hey Staryu, do you think you could beat a solo run of Yellow?" "Shuriken!" Puns aside, I like what you did with comparing the water types here. Have you considered doing dedicated videos like that? I don't know if they'll hold up, but it might be worth considering.
  • @frostbite2890
The stone evolution tradeoff with level-up moves is actually noted in Gen 5 by an NPC (also very obvious from the monkey pokemon you get for free for the first gym), so that's canon, yeah
  • Bruno managing to knockout Staryu is an incredibly small chance. It requires failing a 25% X Defend check, a 25% choice to use Submission, an 80% chance to hit, and a 10.7% chance to crit for .75 * .25 * .8 * .107 = 1.61%. For reference, Staryu has a crit chance of 16.6%, meaning the chance for back to back crits will be 2.76%. It is significantly more likely for Staryu to have multiple crits in a row than for Bruno to be able to hit a critical Submission.
  • @paulmann8570
The Hiker: I need a vacation. Bruno: I gotchu fam.
  • The chart at 2:10 is neat. I wouldn't mind seeing iterations of it in the future, particularly as each series' charts get fuller and fuller. It really clarifies things since there's so many Pokemon on the Yellow ranking now that it's hard to pick certain Pokemon out at a moment's notice.
  • @Re94n
Scott, I loved that intro, been here since the very early days and seen the progression in your presentation skyrocket, I really liked how it was concise and informative, to someone who's never seen one of your videos before, it's a great introduction to the project, but not lengthy and filler enough to put off longtime viewers
  • @beejaytea5964
The tier list is beautiful, being so well-populated. You've got this whole process so refined over the years it is inspiring, excellent work.
  • @cardososensei
Finally, another video to fall asleep to, thanks Scott! Don't take this as a bad thing, you're one of the few things that can help me sleep, I find your videos very soothing and I always make sure I finish watching it the next day. Keep going with the excellent content!
  • @breadpope0358
Was wondering why things were so quiet from the Scott's Thoughts channel... turns out he was doing 29 runs with Staryu... Talk about dedication!
  • Yes sir!!!!! Hope vacation is treating you well Scott!!! Well deserved!
  • @mufasa5851
I watch these so much that get confused when i end up seeing someone else doing a normal run. Love the content
